If you're going to make a system and base it around a controller -- you better hope that controller is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Luckily for Nintendo with the Wii, the Wiimote actually was for a few years exactly that. Trying to replicate that was always impossible, and now they are stuck with a console based around a concept that very few people really care about. There's nothing "wrong" with just making a good upgraded console meant to play the next-generation of game experiences on. That's all the Super NES ever was, and it's widely regarded as the best system Nintendo ever made. |
It`s hard to determine if people embrace the controller or not when they don`t even know what a Wii U is.
The Wii was a perfect example of pick up and play. It`s still here, but Nintendo needed something more to attract not only that market but also the core in a way that other hadn`t tried.
What good would do to Nintendo being another PS4 or Xbox 720? Last time Nintendo did that it failed... twice.
Any company that doesn`t differentiate itself, specially when they are trying to capture a segment of the market is bound to be forgotten.
But in the end, what matters is that games. And Wii U does change things for the better.

What you described was an old fashioned console that everybody could do. Nintendo doesn't work like that.
And odds are, the Wii U will be the best seller this next-gen too.

As someone already said here, SNES was just an upgraded NES and it was awesome! Widely regarded as their best system. Why not have an upgraded system with great first party to differentiate it? If Nintendo games sell Nintendo systems (like everyone says and they're the reason I buy them) then why do they need a gimmick? Just have a better online network and give your devs more power to make their experiences on and you've got gold.

Is this thread about handhelds? No. I do understand that you felt it was necessary to bring up something which could potentially back up your point, which was something in lines of "Nintendo has not won a gen since SNES which they released in 1990". That is really solid. How long ago was that? 23 years? Nooo, can't be. |
nintendo won the past gen with the wii, how long ago was that? from november 2006 till today.

As I understand it, Nintendo went with a CPU in the PPC750 family in order to have backwards compatibility with the Wii.
While I think it's way too early to predict who's gonna "win" or "loose", I do pretty much agree with OP, though I'd say even 7750 GPU (which performs around level of 4870, what lot of people were hoping for/expecting) plus AMD quad core CPU would be more than enough to give 3rd parties platform that is very easy to port to, both current and next-gen titles.
As for Wiimote + ProController combo, IMO that would be way better solution than Gamepad - instead of better innards they spent that money on something that is not such a system mover as they hoped for and by not having Wiimote as default, they denied themselves Wii Sports alike launch titles that proved to be main force behind Wii's success.

Well don't make it look like a purple lunch box and I said good online as well. Also Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker weren't the most mass audience grabbing games in their franchises (I know especially Wind Waker didn't deserve this but it's true from a MASS audience standpoint people were turned off by water cannon and cell shading). Also Double Dash wasn't greatly recieved by people if I remember correctly. Besides didn't Gamecube make them money?

Technically, the Wiimote is still the default controller for multiplayer games and the system had a Wii Sports alike launch title in Nintendoland.
The Gamepad was Nintendo's way of having both a innovative/original controller and having one that 3rd party developers could use for multiplatform games.
