As for Wiimote + ProController combo, IMO that would be way better solution than Gamepad - instead of better innards they spent that money on something that is not such a system mover as they hoped for and by not having Wiimote as default, they denied themselves Wii Sports alike launch titles that proved to be main force behind Wii's success.


Technically, the Wiimote is still the default controller for multiplayer games and the system had a Wii Sports alike launch title in Nintendoland.

The Gamepad was Nintendo's way of having both a innovative/original controller and having one that 3rd party developers could use for multiplatform games.
