As someone already said here, SNES was just an upgraded NES and it was awesome!  Widely regarded as their best system.  Why not have an upgraded system with great first party to differentiate it?  If Nintendo games sell Nintendo systems (like everyone says and they're the reason I buy them) then why do they need a gimmick?  Just have a better online network and give your devs more power to make their experiences on and you've got gold.

Well don't make it look like a purple lunch box and I said good online as well.  Also Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker weren't the most mass audience grabbing games in their franchises (I know especially Wind Waker didn't deserve this but it's true from a MASS audience standpoint people were turned off by water cannon and cell shading).  Also Double Dash wasn't greatly recieved by people if I remember correctly.  Besides didn't Gamecube make them money?
