Forums - Gaming - Your Digital PS3 Titles Will NOT be Playable on the PS4

Too many people to reply to, so I'm not quoting anyone. You guys are all talking from the publisher's point of view. I'm talking about a consumer's point of view.

New computers will run old computer games that you have on your profile. New iPhones and new iPads run your old iOS games. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the same is true for Android devices.

I guess this is just really further proof to the "stone age" that consoles themselves live in. If they can't keep up with the advancing of technology and consumer expectations for owned digital content, then they truly are dinosaurs by nature. I only hope Microsoft tries to really change the game with the next Xbox, because continuing down this console path is continuing down a path to irrelevancy when you have other major devices growing your market instead.

Games a consumer purchases on a digital account should be available to play on any device that user has such an account tied to. Such is how the world has evolved outside of our slow console cycles, and such is the new standard of consumer expectations.

I congratulate Nintendo for at least trying to get this right, but Sony is outright blind to it. It makes me sad to see such a flaw.

It is very simple, it is not currently possible to have any native backwards compatability. All the games, if they actually ran properly on the PS3, were coded around the PS3's odd architecture, for games to be ported, they would basically have to be re-written, as they don't have the emulation software yet. It is not about publishers or Sony being greedy, it is just currently impossible

Sony knows that people want to play things on multiple devices, it is why I can get free Vita games with my PS3 games, and why there are a few games that you can buy on both. It is also how I could play any digital PSP games on my Vita and how I manage to play digital PS1 games on my Vita

This has been posted several times already.

"Why can't they transfer them to the new console?"

Because the PS4 will not contain the hardware required to run PS3 games.

Then explain why, when your copy of ___ is available on the PS4, you can't simply download it? It makes NO sense. If your purchases are saved in your PSN history (they are), then when they become available on the PS4 store, then why can't Sony let you download them for free?

I'm assuming when you say '___' you mean a PS3 game? Sure, they could let you download it to your PS4, but then what are you going to do with it? You still won't be able to run it. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

I really don't understand the issue.

It's a shame that I can't play Crisis Core on the Vita, but they did the right thing in my opinion. Nobody wants noisy, expensive, large UMDs in their handhelds anymore.

The PS4's only option for backwards compatibility for the PS3 would be through Gaikai. I don't see how physical copies of PS3 games and Gaikai would work together.

Put your PS3 copy in and then stream it from Gaikai?

Possibly. Expect having to pay a monthly charge for Gaikai if they do do that though.

That is the prime example of why I LOVE Steam so much. A service that is linked to user account and not hardware.

PSN and LIVE should be far enough developed where users should be able to continue memberships to new consoles without having to re-purchase titles. Every generation brings new gamers anyway, why nickle and dime your loyal users?

what you just said has absolutely nothing to do with PSN. PSN is account bound and any PSN game is playable on mutiple machines if the machine is capable of running it.

That was brought to my attention already... I guess its all about the cell and not the network. But hopefully there will be a way not to double charge users for content they already have on PS3.

I agree, but I'm not sure how it'll work. The service likely won't be launched for another year or so, and there's plenty of time for it to develop.

All that has been said is that ps3 games will not be compatible with ps4 hardware, which everyone already knows. What still hasn't been answered is whether you will have free access to those games you already own via gaikai.

Let me try and make myself more clear. Take, say, The Journey. Lets say you bought it on your PS3, right? Then when you buy a PS4 and go into the PSN store, you see The Journey for sale. Why can't Sony allow, via PSN DL history, you to simply download the title for free on your PS4?

No one can explain this to me.

This thread makes it clear that most hardcore console gamers don't have a clue what an ecosystem is, nor do they want one.

Or it could be just an instance of...we will eat anything sony poops out..even if it's crap.

To me this is totally unnaceptable and I have no intentions on buying the next Xbox or PS4 at more than 150-200 bucks as an impulse purchase if they don't have a coherent ecosystem and backwards compatibility.

This whole "it can't be done technically" is just BS. Should have thought of that when you were pimping the Cell to be the next big thing.
