This has been posted several times already.

"Why can't they transfer them to the new console?"

Because the PS4 will not contain the hardware required to run PS3 games.

Precisely

We just have to hope that they let us play our games via Gaikai when that it possible

This has me nervous that Microsoft will do the same thing, and I'll be out roughly $1000 in digital content all together (probably more). I had always just figured that the big three would just automatically allow this, and it never crossed my mind that they would not allow a transfer. I just don't get it. PS3 was not my console of choice, but I have at least $200 worth of PSN titles and DLC that will not be transferring to the PS4 it this is true.

Microsoft should have no problem implementing BC, they are not switching architectures completley, the 360 and to some extent the xbox before it  has always been basically a gaming optimzied PC, compare that to the CELL in the PS3  and the Emotion engine of the PS2 and you will see sony tends to stick to propritary (until now with ps4)

I don't understand this. Don't people purchase PSN titles and own them? Why can't they transfer them to the new console? I was a bit upset at the way Nintendo handled the Wii digital title transferring, but at least they had a system (even if crude) in place. Sony is giving absolutely nothing.

Hopefully this changes between now and when the console releases. Digital profiles should be tied to the user and playable on any device that uses those profiles. If I bought a new PC and Valve said "sorry, you can't play your old Steam games on your new PC. Re-buy them!" I would be hella pissed.

You're right, you don't understand this.

These games aren't running through hardware or software emulation, they were coded for the PS3. If you want to play them on PS4, they would have to be ported.

I can understand the fact that the games bought for PS3 won't work for PS4. But the games that will run through Gaikai's remote play (which can have any PS game playable) will work, because the actual gave is being run on a remote server. So why can't Sony just let people who have bought a digital PS3 game on their PSN account have a copy of the game on their streaming service?

They might allow this. The details of the Gaikai service have not been confirmed yet.

What Gaikai can do hasn't been fully confirmed yet, it's possible PSN titles will be backwards compatible through Gaikai, but how it will be paid for is also unkown.

They are reserving this as a PSN+ perk for paying for access to Gaikai... maybe even an add-on to a basic PSN+ service.

Gaikai is going to be Sony's Backwards compatibility feature going forward. If you pay for that service, you get BC and/or access to many other older titles. Basically BC plus VC all in one.

This allows them to add value to the service for loyalists as well as not have to worry about any special hardware in future consoles.

This is where Nintendo was held back. They wanted BC inherent in WiiU to Wii. Therefore they had to once again build off of the existing tech vs fully changing.

Considering how efficient and the MCM design of WiiU, expect next Nintendo console to deviate from the same architecture and then just have a secondary tiny WiiU MCM somewhere on the console.

Personally, I prefer Nintendo's approach with Wii U. Slight disconnect with Wii Mode and the ability to upgrade VC for very small fee. Though in the end, this approach will allow future Playstation consoles to immediately have a very large library where Nintendo will have to continuously retool specific games to run on new hardware.

What they actually said was that they haven't made any decisions.  The OP failed to mention that.

"No," Yoshida said, when asked about any current-gen PSN game being natively supported on the PS4. "Unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. The easiest thing technically would be to make PS1 games work on PS4 through emulation. But we aren't talking about our emulation plans as yet. There are two ways: emulation or cloud service. But native support, no, sorry. We could do so if we choose to. We know who purchased what as a record. But we are working on service plans, and we haven't decided."  http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/psn-transfers-ps4/

So, my PS3 will be my last Sony console.

I don't understand how you don't understand what "no backwards compatibility" means at this late date.

Your games aren't going anywhere and are forever tied to your account unlike Nintendo's stone age bullshit. But until there is a solution (emulation or Gaikai) you just can't play them on PS4.
