Pointless question as Sony already confirmed their online play was free.

Sony isn't going to charge for online play. Prof? 70+ million ps3 users they want to upgrade to a ps4.

You could start out charging and go free, but you can't start free and then charge without all hell breaking loose.

It'll either be Wii-U or Steam for me. I just can't see paying to play online in the year 2013 and beyond. That's just ridiculous.

This.  That and they would have started charging with the release of the Vita.  If anything, MS should consider going free and just add more incentive to getting a Gold account.  I think they are probably more concerned about easy money than doing the right thing for the gamers.  I think a paid online will hurt them next gen, though.

No, I'm pretty sure sony has already said it won't charge. WiiU isn't even a next gen console, it is arguably wekaer than a ps3.

Depends on the services you get with it.

Where's the option of "I don't really care since I don't play consoles online and will likely buy a xbox or PS4 regardless of fees since I won't need a subscription"?

The choice was whether or not you would settle for inferior specs if it meant free to play online.  I was seeing how important free online play is.

I understand that but its a very simplistic approach, specs aren't the only difference. Features and software will be the major factors to draw someone, brand loyalty and general interest level will also count. The amount required to play online would also bear significance.

If someone is driven away from purchasing a console only because of pay to play with a standard, relatively small sum, then they weren't really interested to begin with, in my opinion.

I wouldn't go that far - XBLG isn't exactly a small sum. For only 4 years I paid the same amount for XBLG as I did for the console itself. And that's only for myself - I have a brother that I shared the console with, and we'd need to pay double that if we wanted to use our own user names.

Maybe others aren't as tight on money as I am, but assuming they stay with this model, it's bad enough that I'm probably done with Microsoft, for good.

Not being able to have more than one user on one subscription is ridiculous for sure. And annoying, like when you're playing Resident Evil 5 or 6 splitscreen, one has to play a default player even if you have more users available on the xbox dashboard, you need two separate subscriptions to use two "proper" players. That's really stupid and ruins the experience for me.

As I've been saying earlier though, for me its not a problem since I never play console games online (and only rarely play console games at all). I can see that it probably annoys a lot of people but I can't imagine that its the deciding factor for most people who choose not to buy an xbox.

Nope. I wiill still be sticking witth the ps4 but not pay for the online subs. I am not much of an online player and it wouldnt affect me either way.

Generally people who already have the ps3 are invested in it and may pay or go without the MP. The lack or presence of MP would more likely affect those coming into consoles for the first time or casuals who will look at price first.

You're doing it wrong.

Don't pay full price for XBLG. Buy it on Amazon. Better yet buy it on sale on Amazon for $35. You would have only paid  $140 for the last four years.

Or you and your brother just need to get two friends to split the cost of the XBLG Family plan. Then it only costs you each $25/month. That would be $100 for four years.
