What happened is it costs $410 to get to NSMBU for a system that has nothing else on it.

cool its a deal.
In my opinion, the idea for the controller was a lousy one to begin with.
After so much R&D I expected something a little more groundbreaking, and so did their market. What's gonna save the Wii U will be software, but I really doubt it will reach the level of sales the Wii had, simply because it's a very unimpressive system no matter how you choose to see it.
Wii u will be fine. Nintendo knows they goofed up as they have no games to offer untill March. They are also the most expensive console out right now which is a bad place for nintendo. Sales will prob be slow the first half of the year but i expect a big jump for the second half. Two things will get the U rolling. Sony and Ms finally reveal their systems and priceing. This is huge in allot of ways because right now the wii U is competeing with a bunch of rumors. Once sony and ms reveal there goods and priceing only then can people really decide what to buy. Wii u will pick up customers because if the other consoles blow it away spec wise they will get the group who cant or wont pay for those specs. If they go for a more reasonable price then there machines will be close to what the U has under the hood. This will leave allot of people diappointed which brings up my second point. Nintendo will be rolling out there heavy hitters for the first time in HD which will certainly get the sales going at a time that the other two are showing off brand new consoles. If it appears that nintendo has closed the gap graphicly there gonna pick up allot of customers.
The Wii U will go down in history as one of the worst selling consoles ever. Only 2.5m sold to date, xbox 360 (which is 6 years older) is selling double the Wii U (there seems to be no supply issues where I live, Wii U is in stock everywhere), the PS3 (5 years older than the Wii U) is almost tripling the Wii U.
Nintendo's approach to the Wii U was flawed. The touch screen is not something that appealed to the demographic from the original Wii, the thought process of re-releasing games already on other consoles on the Wii U to make the launch look large didn't appeal to existing PS3 or 360 owners nor the vast majority of existing Wii owners, they still really lack a trophy/achievement system, lack Blu-ray (not good for a new console shipping in late 2012), and the storage on the device is a joke at 8 or 32GB.
Once the Next Xbox and PS releases the Wii U will be long forgotten as it won't have the technical capability to compete with them. Wii U will be lucky to see 10 million in sales by the end of 2013. The only thing that can save it would be an amazing and innovative games lineup for holiday 2013. And even that probably won't save it.
Although I love Nintendo as a games company, I think their hardware days are coming to an end. Nintendo will probably join the ranks of Sega and become a 3rd party developer at some near future point (1-4 years).

You're right. The Virtual Boy sold even more than the Wii U.
I think it´s a combination of things...bad marketing, price, few games, the economy, the concept behind the system.
Marketing -- Nintendo can fix that.I bet there are still plenty of people that think the gamepad is just an accessory for the Wii, and not the main controller for a completely new system..plus this system, by default, is much more difficult to market than the Wii was.
Price -- Nintendo can fix this..$360 to get to a 2D Mario game (that recycles so much content from past NSMB games, instead of a lot of new content that we used to get with each new iteration for the NES/SNES) is a big no.
Few games -- That will eventually be taken care of, as far as 1st/2nd party are concerned...3rd party?..we´ll see, but I wouldn´t hold my breath.
The economy -- Nintendo has no control over it
Concept behind the system -- That´s the big '?' as far as I´m concerned...if/when Nintendo gets the marketing/price/games right, will the gamepad/asymetric gameplay concept pay off?
