In my opinion, the idea for the controller was a lousy one to begin with.
After so much R&D I expected something a little more groundbreaking, and so did their market. What's gonna save the Wii U will be software, but I really doubt it will reach the level of sales the Wii had, simply because it's a very unimpressive system no matter how you choose to see it.
