Forums - Sales - Global UP! 5th January

I think we all know why the Wii U didn't sell very much in North America and Europe, and it doesn't have to do with "it has no 3rd party games/no games." It has to do with a lot of people not spending money after the holidays. Almost EVERYTHING is slow this time of year in North America (and possibly Europe as well). It's best to start looking at it once the market has recovered from the holidays, now is a bad time to look at how things are doing. All we can do is speculate.

Won't happen until October/November. As you can see here January is stronger than all month until then. Numbers will only go down.

I can't see pikmin saving Wiiu this semester, because all these games in this list sold more that Pikmin 1 and 2:

PosGamePlatformYearGenrePublisherNorth America
Europe
Japan
Rest of World
Global
1 Pikmin
GC
2001 Strategy Nintendo 0.78 0.25 0.56 0.04 1.63
2 Pikmin 2
GC
2004 Strategy Nintendo 0.48 0.13 0.56 0.03 1.20

The franchise declined even further during the Wii era.

3 New Play Control! Pikmin
Wii
2008 Strategy Nintendo 0.26 0.09 0.19 0.04 0.58
4 New Play Control! Pikmin 2
Wii
2009 Strategy Nintendo 0.04 0.12 0.20 0.01 0.37

You sound exactly like VGKing, though Pikmin 3 will likely drastically outsell the previous entries (I'm expecting 2.5mil LT).

It isn't a killer-app though.

I noticed that too. Looks like he copy and pasted one of my comments.

When Nintendo was seriously getting destroyed in console sales for the very first time (PS1 arrival), they released the best games ever on N64.

They are getting desperate with constant Mario releases and slow output in America (but the 3DS is OK overall!).

I hope their decline continues. :)

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Wii U sales are dreadful. It's only going to get worse.....
Vita continues to disappoint. I can't believe how low its selling in America. Only 20k. WOW.
PS3 sales are bad in America, decent in Europe.
3DS continues to sell below 6/7 year old consoles in NA/EU. But hey, at least its selling above the Vita!

but arent hh and consoles a different animal?

Yeah. Handhelds are supposed to sell more than home consoles since they are a personal device and people buy multiple for their kids.

Why does Wii U need saving? It's sold about 2.5 million units in six weeks. That's more than PS3 and Xbox 360 sold in the first six weeks, and those systems crossed 70 million.

It's been six weeks, that's it. Monster Hunter hasn't launched. Mario Kart hasn't launched. Smash Bros. hasn't launched. Wii Sports hasn't launched. Donkey Kong, Metroid, Animal Crossing, and many others haven't launched.

I don't understand why so many think it's in danger of flopping.

if you are going to compare to ps3's first 6 weeks please don't forget that ps3 was only out in 2 regions over those 6 weeks.  if you align all regions you'll find a different story being told.

Fair enough. But now PS3 is in third place. Proving again that it's far too early for so much negativity vis-a-vis Wii U sales.

The point is that Wii U doesn't need saving. It's not on life support. It's not in danger of becoming the next Sega Dreamcast.

It's underperforming in comparison to one of the most popular video game systems of all time -- the Wii -- but it's doing quite well in comparison to the other two seventh generation systems, which happen to be selling quite well six and seven years after launching.

It just strikes me that much of this doom and gloom has to do with gut feelings and wishful thinking, and less to do with numbers and projections.

without a doubt.  six weeks of data is not enough to know one way or the other how the wiiU will do in the long run.  the wii and the GC hardly look different after only six weeks.  it won't be until febuary/march that we will realistically be able to make LTD predictions with any semblance of accuracy.

Wii U numbers are HORRIBLE. It is selling BELOW 6 and 7 year old consoles, and these numbers will only get lower the coming weeks.

That's completely normal for a new console at launch. We've been over this enough times. The Wii U is selling faster than the 360 or PS3 sold at launch... if its numbers are HORRIBLE, theirs were CATASTROPHIC. If the PS3 and 360 could go on to sell 70m+, then looking at these numbers, the Wii U can do the same or better.

80 million doesn't sound so HORRIBLE to me.

Wii U is a Nintendo console. It won't have the 3rd party games that PS3/360 had or PS4/720 will have in the future.
Yeah, it is normal for a new console to be outsold by older consoles, but there is also a danger that consumers still think Wii U is just an accessory for the Wii. Like someone said before, Wii U is competing with the Playstation and Xbox brands. The lower the Wii U sales, the less of an advantage this year headstart will be.

just a quick reminder

5th January 2013 first week after Xmas for WiiU release year = 135k sold for a total of 2,4 mil
6th January 2007 first week after Xmas from PS3 release date = 136k sold for a total of 1,4mil
7th January 2006 first week after Xmas after the XBox360 release = 117k sold and 1,3 mil in total

http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/38725/Global/

Was that flop? Did Sony or MS do something quick and massive to change that?

Plus a minor difference: Nintendo has the 3DS in beast mode and Wii and DS keep bringing profit in... not everything feels doomed from Nintendo to me... any comment???

I am happy to have a Wii U selling on pair of XB360 and PS3!

Wii U wont' get the amazing 3rd party support PS3/360 got.

@bold

54,751 130,236 64,803 300,661
86,098 66,998 1,573 169,602
31,713 24,550 69,705 134,849

Wii U isn't selling on par with PS3/360. It's selling below.  PS3 is selling more than double this week.

Oops - http://www.digitalspy.ca/gaming/news/a96023/ps2-outsells-ps3-by-4m-in-2008.html

PS2 was a beast dude. Even the Wii never got close to its sales. Just look at those sales. 13m in its 8th year? That is crazy. PS3 never had a chance.
But lucky for Sony a lot of that 3rd party support carried on to the PS3. Can't say the same will happen for Wii U, Wii never had much 3rd party support to begin with. Games like Just Dance sell amazingly well, but those are also on PS3/360 now and I expect them to end up on PS4/720 as well.

Seems we have to bring back the chalkboard for the wii U.  Have to house these Wii U excuses somewhere:

Ethomaz was pretty much warned by Khan last night because he posted a WiiU related .gif from GAF, claiming it was unnecessary and not to do it again.

Sadly I expect the same to happen with this.

Well, what should be put on the board? Nobody claimed 'game X' will save the WiiU, as Nintendo doesn't tell us the lineup beyond Q1.

based on what i heard hyped up prior to yesterday's NPD..

wonderful 101

pikmin 3

lego city stories

rayman legends

wii fit

eventual obvious nintendo titles like SSB, mario kart, whathaveyou.

Many are happy with these games coming (me included, I love Pikmin and Lego City and W101 are looking good), but I didn't heard they should move hardware. Some said that Lego COULD maybe create a short-term spike. Mario Kart isn't announced, Smash Bros will take more than a year. So the chalk board looks pretty empty. We don't know of anything that may save the WiiU.

How about changing from "Global" to "USA."  It's a bit of a different story then.  It shows February and March a bit stronger than January.
