Being obtuse on purpose?

We are talking about the current iterartions.

The PS1 and PS2 were shit build quality, didnt stop them selling it?  Sony denied that too... until they lost a class action lawsuit and had to compensate every single user.

No. you are conviniently trying to ingore the past.

The PS1 and PS2 were fine quality wise, don't lie they were nowhere near 360 standards.

Neither does 360. We live in 2012 BTW.

Exactly since the 2008 drastic (hardware) redesign. The ps3 was improved (to make it less power hungry) not redesigned.

So comparing the PS3 to the 360 now, ignoring that little fact is grossly missleading.

-We live in 2012 BTW.
-The 360 sold more (past tense). The PS3 sells more (present tense).

The current xbox is probably the best hardware out there.  I'd say the biggest risk of the 3 would be the next PS as it will no doubt be made on the cheap to save costs for the ailing parent company.

That doesn't make much sense. Because Sony made a fool proof product the first time, they will want to skimp on quality next run, and because MS made one of the most faulty electronics in it's history in the beginning they will somehow not do the same for the sequel?

I don't think MS will allow that to happen but that statement doesn't seem likely. MS purposely let the 360 go out with subpar quality chips because they needed to beat Sony to the punch. Sony products are known to be some of the most top quality around (as well as the most expensive). They rarely break down. I got a PS1 in a box somewhere and it still works like brand new. The original PS2 was probably the only product with above 10% failure rate due to the lens dying, yet thats still nothing in comparison to the 360's close to 50% rate with the original model :/

Sony has a lot to prove with PS4/Orbis, expect it to be the same quality as all their other products but it probably won't be as cost heavy as the PS3 was. They will concede with the arms race with MS and settle for decent parts, all the while differentiating themselves in some other way (rumoured head mount display).

so whats your view of the current 360?

The 360 is PC gaming for the non tech savvy and it has been outdated for a good 3 years now since throwing 200 bucks into a PC upgrade sees actual benefits.

It's an acceptable 2008 product. I think I made it clear.

Which is why I find it within reason to question the nextbox's quality even at this early in the game.

i hope this is just a rumor and the ps4 gets out fall of 2013 they cant afford to ship later
unless both consoles come out 2014

2014 for Sony seems too late, given Nintendo a 2 year head start and MS 1 is very risky, unless Sony can warranty an extremely big first party and third party (without ports) launch or launch window games for the new system. And even that can't warranty a short-term success since those third party games will also be on the next xbox and probably the Wii U, only big third party exclusives will probably do the job. And given by history, launch games are usually not that great. Sure there's always the "most have tittle" but for the most part those games only represent the fans of a company.

Aside for games at launch (and launch window), third party devs will find it hard to make games for the system given that the Wii U and next xbox will have a big install base already, so at least at the beginning it will be hard for the PS4 to get those games (unless there are big incentives from Sony).

So it may not be that bad for a long-term success (this of course will depend on many other circumstances we don't know yet) but in the short-term success it will definitely "destroy" the system, I guess it will be similar to the PS3.

why is PS4 releasing later a good thing?

Some points...

- PS3 is still powerful enough...
- PS3 not reached popular price point...
- There is a lot of games to be released next year for it...
- AMD will have more time to put a decent GPU in the A-10 APU...
- The 28nm process will be more mature (less yelds loss = less cost loss)...
- No competition with Microsoft at launch (that's a guess because I think Microsoft will launch the next box in 2014 too)

I can list more...

For me, for you... for all consumers the 2014 is a better launch than 2013.

It only benefits Nintendo and MS. It really does.

Playstation dominance was founded on launching before major competitors. This gen PS3 lost much of its 3rd party dominance and marketshare, largely because developers were allready used to making games for the 360 and the early adopters gave 360 an edge.

PS4 launching last is even worse because unlike last gen where Wii launched alongside PS3, PS4 will be 2 years behind WiiU and more or less 1 year behind Xbox. And it no longer has the PS2 brand name to carry it like it did with PS3 in its early years.

It will be Sonys final biggest mistake to launch last next gen. Itll be this gen, only repeated. Fine by me, but confused as to how youd agree with me.

Playstation brand is still strong. Launching a little later than MS won't hurt it THAT Much if it launches at at the same price or lower.

BTW, PS dominance was due to great games and great hardware, not early launches. Did you forget how the Dreamcast launched before the PS2?
Launching last would be a mistake, I agree, but it wouldn't be their "Final".

instead of some expensive new peice of tech peripheral I wish they would just build a powerful machine ($400 with a small loss), no included peripherals, BC as an add-on, and cloud gaming touted as a big selling point.  Then actually advertise (well) all your AMAZING EXCLUSIVES to the world and let them sell.  If people knew how awesome Resistance 1&3, Infamous, Killzone, Uncharted, LBP, Ratchet and Clank, GT5, and all their other amazing games were along with free online (maybe tell people how much more xbox will cost in the long run) I can't believe they will still choose xbox.  I mean honestly at least advertise PS+ and tell people the massive value they're getting for the same cost as live.

However, the same site also reported onproblems with the chip’s manufacturing with one source calling the component quality ‘painfully low’. The issue is rumoured to have cause production delays.

RROD again?

The site suggests PS4 will launch Spring or Autumn 2014.

 Good news if true.

The name of the PS4 project is Thebes. As you might have guessed, other than it being an AMD CPU and GPU, we don’t have much more specific details. It is said to be a 28nm part, likely fabbed at Global Foundries or IBM for the first run, and out after Oban. That would most likely be the spring of 2014, but it could be fall of that year too.

I don't like the CPU + GPU together from AMD... seems too weak. But I like the 28nm talk .

Microsoft wouldnt make that massive mistake twice.

Are you sure? A Microsoft employee(dont' know which one) stated that their decision to launch first and all those troubles was worth it as it gave them several advantages.

I just don't see how anyone can buy the next-gen Xbox with confidence.

The best? Are you talking about reliability? I don't even think we have any data that suggests that.
It is still an Xbox 360 though, it is a completely different process to make an entirely new console with completely different parts.

A reliable Xbox 360 Slim in no way speaks to Microsofts ability to launch reliable next-gen console. All I'm saying is that at the first reports of failing consoles...people need to pay attention. Don't let brand loyalty cloud your judgement.

In no way? lol cmon. Surely the PR and financial faoout is reason enough to get things right next time. The 360 Slim is reliable, the first Xbox was more reliable then PS2. Id say MS has a good shot next gen.

Yes. In no way.
Xbox 360 Slim is just a redesign so there was no way for something like the RROD to occur again.

If Microsoft rushed their next-gen console it could easily repeat its mistakes. The question is....will they?

RROD was exposed in mid 2007. Thats a year and a half. Sales still continued. People preferred it over PS3.

And by "current" I think he means 2012 current. Like modern current.

2008 was when the 360 got a drastic motherboard redesign that effectively ended huge fail rates. you know that.

and exposed means little. media and promotion is everything in the US market

It was widely reported in the media. Its called free press. But 2007 was considered by many to be 360s golden year. People just thought it was justified to get the games, even if their console was at risk, over a PS3. And I think its that scenerio that freaks you out...that gamers legitimately wanted a 360 over PS3 knowing its faults.

I think that just speaks to how much Microsoft downplayed/covered up the RROD epidemic.
If there's was a sign on the box or near the shelf at the stores that says "this product may be defective" Do you think people would have still bought it?
