Forums - Nintendo - Reggie interview: Wii U will have a very long life period + good third party support

How many third party exclusives did the PS3 and Xbox360 get? Especially in the last 2 years? The Wii U already has like 10 of them in their launch window alone, excluding any digital exclusives of course. Admittedly, some of them get published by Nintendo but it's contract work with third parties, MS and Sony could do the same. People wanted Nintendo to step up and it looks like they did.

Launch window in the long term is somewhat inconsequential.

The key period for the Wii U is what happens afterwards.

You don't need a 1000 exclusives like I said. But 3-4 Bayonetta 2 sized exclusives every year from year 2-4 of the console cycle are important, and these exclusives should be "demographic broadening" .... meaning not "Mario _____".

Once Nintendo can get that they'll be OK, but until they do they're always going to have this problem with droughts. They haven't had a single console that had a really steady flow of content since the SNES, and that was 20 years ago now.

Bayonetta 2 sized? You do realise that Bayonetta didn't sell all that well. Bayonetta 2 sized exclusives aren't going to secure Wii U's 3rd party support. I don't think any of the 3rd party exclusives Nintendo has secured for Wii U amont to substantial 3rd party exclusive support outside of Japan. Rayman Legends is probably substantial for the West, but only moderately so, and Rayman already had exclusives with Nintendo, so it's not a new exclusive.

Bayonetta 2/Rayman Legends are fine for Nintendo.

Nintendo can sell consoles because they have their own superstar franchises like Mario/DK/Zelda/Pokemon etc.

Nintendo's problem is they don't have anything to fill in the gaps outside of that. They're never going to be Microsoft with the "dudebros" crowd, but there is room to carve out audiences for more offbeat content I think.

That's where having a steady stream of notably interesting content is fine. It doesn't have to be something unrealistic like "OMG GTAIV is Wii U exclusive doooods!" which would cost Nintendo a fortune.

You work with Platinum. You work with Frozenbyte (Trine). I'd take a look at a studio like Relic (Warhammer, currently in limbo because of THQ), scoop up Itagaki's Devil's Third which is in limbo. Tell NOA to get off their ass and find 3-4 really good Western indie studios to finance a project with for the eShop or even retail release. I'd give Mistwalker another shot at a reasonably budgeted Wii U RPG too.

NOW, see in combination with EAD + Monolith + Retro + NST, hopefully you can have a consistent flow of game projects that are finishing up every 3-4 months, so you don't ever go a full quarter without a notable release. That's how you keep your consumer base interested and happy.

He is right, imo.

Wii's main problem was not exactly power. It was resolution. Games look awful in modern TVs not because they're awful, but because they can't display the way they should. Since there won't be any improvement in TVs for the near or even long future, Wii U is fine. And if Wii and gamecube can look like this on Dolphin... imagine Wii U.

(gamecube, really impressive)

Man, that looks sooooo good!!! I espacially want XenoBlade in HD - looks gorgeous!!!

Big words Reggie, but you've got to prove it!

He's right, the Wii U will live longer as long as it remains a non-casual dominated console based on offerings. If it recieved steady third party it will be fine. Because the Wii was dependent 90% on casual usage it was expected that its lifeline wasnt going to be long.

My personal feeling is third parties especially Western ones are a lost cause for Nintendo.

They should focus on smaller Western devs like Frozenbyte (Trine) by really making Nintendo Network a premiere choice for indie houses and building up more exclusive content through Japanese alliances. Get that Itagaki game, get Ninja Gaiden, work out more alliances with Square-Enix and so on.

Even if the Wii U can run say Star Wars 1313 ... if all the versions are $60, who's going to pay $60 for the Wii U version that doesn't run at 1080p and is missing several graphical effects? The 720/PS4 versions are predictably going to sell better. Even as a Nintendo fan, when it comes to my own hard earned money, I'm not buying an inferior version of any game just to support Nintendo.

I think that if 3rd party games sell well on Wii U western studios will be on board. 2K said it themselves; they're taking a cautious approach to wait and see how it'll fare. If games like ZombiU, Rayman, Bayo2 and the likes do well WiiU will get more support. I'm very sure ZombiU will do quite well (at the very minimum 1m, but probably 2m and up).

And why Star Wars 1313 isn't coming to WiiU is a mystery; it's coming to PS360, which WILL be inferior consoles.

But I do agree with you; Nintendo should get some exclusive 3rd party indie support AND get 4-5 3rd party studios to make games for the WiiU, so that we don't have any droughts. Mistwalker and Premium would be a great start!

I hope so! Lately I have become angrieer and angrier at missing out on the onslaught of big games to the HD twins. If nintendo is not going to have third party support then at least put out games to ill they're place.

I agree 100% with you on this one!! And it really bugs me to see that WIiU won't get every 3rd party game as well - I'm thinking about the new Tomb Raider!!

Relic are working on their biggest most ambitious game ever in Company of Heroes 2, not exactly in limbo. Itagaki's Valhalla Game Studios has already partnered with Doobic Game Studios to release Devil's Third, in fact they set up a new company that they both co-own to handle the franchise, which will be cross media not just games aparently.

Well, Nintendo is just catching up with the PS3 and the X360. And including an exclusive controller will give them problems again when 3rd Party developers have problems with porting the games.

The Wii attracted new gamers with its remote control, but it was excluding them from ports of most PS360 Games... apart from the missing HD graphics.

Nintendo will still have problems with 3rd Party developers. I wonder if the next Final Fantasy, Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid will be released at the same time on the Wii U. I somehow doubt it.

I am currently playing Silent Sill on the Wii and before I bought it I had to decide whether I buy it on the Wii, PS2 or the PSP... and that was not the only game where I had to choose between PS2, PSP or Wii. Somehow the Wii never felt like "next generation" to me because it simply did not get most of the "next gen" games.

Maybe the same will happen when PS4 or the next xbox really start the "next generation". They will get the new games and the WII U and the PS360 will get a own version of the game.

Perhaps the WII U will even help to prolong the life of the PS3 for several years... However, i think that the new PS and Xbox will have a weak start into the generation because most people will wait for the big software releases before they will finally upgrade. Well, thats what I will do.

I am going to buy a 3DS and a VITA... but we still haven't reached the point where there are enough games coming. And if I wait for the turning point the prices are likely to go down. And I can wait and see if there are any YLODS/RRODs or redesigns...

thats the point, we all know that first party Nintendo games are going to rock so hard, but the problem is that we need more games ( good ones from third party developers, bethesda, 2k, ea, ubisoft, activision, PG, Sega, gearbox etc etc... ) to fill the empty spaces between nintendo first party releases , that was the problem with the wii, for a "nintendo hardcore gamer" there was a big periods of time between good games released on the wii and with the wii u this is what is going to change apparently I HOPE SO!
