How many third party exclusives did the PS3 and Xbox360 get? Especially in the last 2 years? The Wii U already has like 10 of them in their launch window alone, excluding any digital exclusives of course. Admittedly, some of them get published by Nintendo but it's contract work with third parties, MS and Sony could do the same. People wanted Nintendo to step up and it looks like they did.

Launch window in the long term is somewhat inconsequential.

The key period for the Wii U is what happens afterwards.

You don't need a 1000 exclusives like I said. But 3-4 Bayonetta 2 sized exclusives every year from year 2-4 of the console cycle are important, and these exclusives should be "demographic broadening" .... meaning not "Mario _____".

Once Nintendo can get that they'll be OK, but until they do they're always going to have this problem with droughts. They haven't had a single console that had a really steady flow of content since the SNES, and that was 20 years ago now.

Bayonetta 2 sized? You do realise that Bayonetta didn't sell all that well. Bayonetta 2 sized exclusives aren't going to secure Wii U's 3rd party support. I don't think any of the 3rd party exclusives Nintendo has secured for Wii U amont to substantial 3rd party exclusive support outside of Japan. Rayman Legends is probably substantial for the West, but only moderately so, and Rayman already had exclusives with Nintendo, so it's not a new exclusive.

Bayonetta 2/Rayman Legends are fine for Nintendo.

Nintendo can sell consoles because they have their own superstar franchises like Mario/DK/Zelda/Pokemon etc.

Nintendo's problem is they don't have anything to fill in the gaps outside of that. They're never going to be Microsoft with the "dudebros" crowd, but there is room to carve out audiences for more offbeat content I think.

That's where having a steady stream of notably interesting content is fine. It doesn't have to be something unrealistic like "OMG GTAIV is Wii U exclusive doooods!" which would cost Nintendo a fortune.

You work with Platinum. You work with Frozenbyte (Trine). I'd take a look at a studio like Relic (Warhammer, currently in limbo because of THQ), scoop up Itagaki's Devil's Third which is in limbo. Tell NOA to get off their ass and find 3-4 really good Western indie studios to finance a project with for the eShop or even retail release. I'd give Mistwalker another shot at a reasonably budgeted Wii U RPG too.

NOW, see in combination with EAD + Monolith + Retro + NST, hopefully you can have a consistent flow of game projects that are finishing up every 3-4 months, so you don't ever go a full quarter without a notable release. That's how you keep your consumer base interested and happy.
