Well, Nintendo is just catching up with the PS3 and the X360. And including an exclusive controller will give them problems again when 3rd Party developers have problems with porting the games.
The Wii attracted new gamers with its remote control, but it was excluding them from ports of most PS360 Games... apart from the missing HD graphics.
Nintendo will still have problems with 3rd Party developers. I wonder if the next Final Fantasy, Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid will be released at the same time on the Wii U. I somehow doubt it.
I am currently playing Silent Sill on the Wii and before I bought it I had to decide whether I buy it on the Wii, PS2 or the PSP... and that was not the only game where I had to choose between PS2, PSP or Wii. Somehow the Wii never felt like "next generation" to me because it simply did not get most of the "next gen" games.
Maybe the same will happen when PS4 or the next xbox really start the "next generation". They will get the new games and the WII U and the PS360 will get a own version of the game.
Perhaps the WII U will even help to prolong the life of the PS3 for several years... However, i think that the new PS and Xbox will have a weak start into the generation because most people will wait for the big software releases before they will finally upgrade. Well, thats what I will do.
I am going to buy a 3DS and a VITA... but we still haven't reached the point where there are enough games coming. And if I wait for the turning point the prices are likely to go down. And I can wait and see if there are any YLODS/RRODs or redesigns...
