Not really surprising, but kind of worries me. The last game I remember getting an Adult Only rating was Manhunt 2. & If remember correctly Nintendo has a zero tolerance for AO (here in the US that is) which is why Manhunt has to be toned down for an M rating.

If the ESRB ends up giving that rating to the NA verison, the game might suffer the same fate. But probably not since the violence is much worse in Mad World (in my personal opinion) and that game got an M rating.

I don't think we will ever see violence being toned down on Nintendo consoles again. This time they really aim to grab the "hardcore" gamers, as seen with ZombieU being an exclusive launch title and all.

They would probably want their kiddy image to be gone for good after this upcoming generation.

The kiddy image has nothing to do with this. Nintendo platforms have had violent/bloody games for 20 years now (almost) beginning with Mortal Kombat 2 which was uncensored on the SNES. I remember that BMX game on the GameCube had FMVs with nude female strippers whereas that content was censored by Sony on the PS2.

Nintendo generally doesn't censor, after the Mortal Kombat debacle of 1993, they basically washed their hands of telling developers what their games can have content wise and leave that to the ratings board.

Censorship is not why they have a kiddy image.

Maybe I should've added that to my original post. Earlier it was Nintnendo to have mature games censored (a.k.a Mortal Kombat, but no more). Now it's the ESRB that whom becuase they gave Manhunt the AO, that forced R* to tone it down so Nintendo would allow them to publish it on the Wii. I don't think Nintendo cared  at all for the content per se. Its just that the graphic violence "accidentaly* caused it to get the AO.

Nintendo has a "kiddy" image because by and large they are more kid-centric than the other two console makers who market primarily to teenagers/adult males first and foremost.

Also most Nintendo franchises that end up defining the platform are cartoony/colorful/Disney-esque in nature.

A Ninja Gaiden port with more blood is not going to change that really. It doesn't hurt though.

That is reality only in the mind of Nintendos detractors.

Nintendo has always been a family oriented console aimed at providing something for "everyone".  People began mass labling it as kiddie last gen as insult out of spite for its success with the Wii.

Cartoony/colorful in no way equals childish. Its a matter of style and design for those who have more taste in artstyle than whatever looks the most grimy and violent. I think that pretty much defines the difference between Nintendo fans and others. Nintendo fans see more colors and spectrums in gaming.

Nintendo has made very few games that were "aimed" specicially at children.

Their games aren't aimed at age groups. They are aimed at different types of gamers which is why they have such a large variety.

Not sure why you feel the need to try to insult people who aren't necessarily fans of all Nintendo first party games, but whatever floats your boat.  The colors thing is just silly.

As for the OP, it seems to me that Nintendo is being very aggressive in going after the core gamer by using overt sex and violence. They're really trying to expand the portfolio of the Wii U in that regard.  It's a pretty interesting move.  I can't help but wonder if there will be some backlash from the media.  I'm sure The Sun will probably try to stir something up.

What insult? I'm just calling it like it is. If its does invole gun/swords and blood then its called kiddie these days.

Oh pretty please rise to my challenges :P

That comment sir, is the stereotype of the classic grown adult core Nintendo gamer to justify their love for Nintendo. Nothing wrong with that, but dont make Nintendo look like something they arent to make yourself feel better.

Its kiddie if there is little effort put into the lor and storytelling. Its kiddie if children can beat the game and adults finish the game with 100+ lives (like NSMB Wii). How the games looks is just the icing on the cake IMO. If its Disney-easue then children is the #1 intended audience. You dont attract adults with bright colors and cute faces unless Nintendo wants to target adults with growing up complexes. Also Nintendo has never made anything M-rated. M rated can range from blood and violence......but it also means the word itself: content and themese not suitable for children. Think about that.

But the first points I feel hold more merit.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I think in actuality what really gave hold to the "kiddie" notion was the decision to not use CDs with the N64.

Up until then, Nintendo made cartoony/whimsical games primarily, but it was never really a big deal because you had all genres and all different styles of games.

That stripped Nintendo of their wider content backing and really narrowed their library offerings.

If that hadn't happened, the N64 could've had games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill, etc.

In that case, I don't think the "kiddie stigma" would've stuck to the N64, especially combined with GoldenEye/Turok/etc.

But obviously history didn't work out that way. In a lot of ways, I think Nintendo is still paying for that one decision. It's never ever been the same for them with third parties since then.

I think if Iwata was in charge then, the decision would've been different. They would've kept the cartridge slot on the N64 but sat down with at least the Japanese 3rd parties and listen to their concerns and come up with a compromise (most likely a combo cart/CD system, like the Saturn, so both EAD and third parties would've been happy).

I love this irony

I will say this though ... Ninja Gaiden is a pretty solid franchise. Nintendo should try and secure Ninja Gaiden 4 and work with Tecmo to get the quality level back up (or maybe even broker a peace with Itagaki).

They just need more visible character properties like Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden associated specifically with their brand and it will start to ease some of these stereotypes that cling to Nintendo.

When you think XBox you think Halo and Gears of War. When you think Playstation you think Drake/Uncharted and God of War and Gran Turismo.

Nintendo just lacks identifiable character properties in that same range.

Nintendo is at its best when they make well-polished family friendly games. That's what makes them a dominant force in this industry.

That said, it's strange to have an AO game on a console, especially since that tends to alienate families/children as any console manufacturer's potential demo.

Pixel Art can be fun.

It's always good to broaden your horizons. Nintendo doesn't have to shed its image to offer a variety of gaming experiences. While this may or may not be a deal breaker for some it's good to see something in Nintendo's catalog that truly has something for EVERYONE! Long live the Wii U!

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

If Ninja Gaiden 2 wasn't a problem I don't see anything in Razor's Edge that's different. Japan has a different ratings board.

Basically in the West you can't get an AO rating unless you start getting into nudity/sex (ripping off people's heads is OK, but simulated sex and prolonged nudity is not).

The only way Razor's Edge can get an AO rating here is if Ryu and Ayane have full-on nude sex scene in the game. Shredding thousands of people to death is OK though, lol.

Define West. Because here in Europe nudity will get you a medium rating (USK 12 mabe here in germany), but extreme violence will result in strict ratings. So your observation applies more to the US, than the 'West' in general.

That`s kinda ironic: since like ever, Nintendo`s (home) consoles have been branded as being for kids and now Wii U happens to be the first to launch with a "M" title. How about that!? :)

people who always brand themselves as "hardcore gamer" and think nintendo is too kiddy for them have jalopeno in their butt right now.

At first I thought you meant the ESRB AO rating, but Cero Z is nothing surprising.
