I'm not a Nintendo detractor, lol, I've been buying Nintendo consoles since the very first NES.

This label has existed since the Genesis days now 20 years ago, you must be pretty young if you think it started just last generation.

I agree cartoony shouldn't equal childish, but to many people it does.

Who's to say Nintendo doesn't like it anyway? They make a lot of money off kids, a market that Sony/MS largely neglect. Money is money.

Nintendo's concept of games for everyone is sound, I think the problem with it in the West is that what defines "family friendly" has changed from 1985 to today.

Doesn't matter if you buy them or not, that logic didn't become massievly popular until the Wii was released.

Nintendo always boasted the "most" mature games until last gen. They had GE64(the most influential FPS in history) straight out the door on the n64 and the RE Remake for the GC. I'm not evne going to get into Killer Instinct and Smash Bros. Are you going to say Smash Brothers is kiddie?

There were people who would call it that, but it was never a mjaor issue until the Wii came out. The kiddie argument is almost 100% synonomous with the argument of the Wii's graphics or as it went "The Wii can only do kiddie graphics". No time before the Wii did people outright deny Nintendo had Mature games and that mature games could sell like they do now.

Though I'm not going to argue this further beause its pointless. Teere isn't even evidence to back up your claim so saying even this much was foolish of me.

what? saying it's more influential than the first FPS is just silly. As well Doom, Half Life, Quake etc. Maybe on consoles.

GoldenEye was great and Nintendo never (ever) should've listened to Rare's designers (since when should designers be given that kind of business input?) in that case.

They should've re-inked Bond for several more exclusive games on Nintendo platforms. If those Rare designers really wanted to work on Perfect Dark and do something different -- fine, but they should've retained the rights to the 007 license and let another team make more 007 games.

Bond really was the perfect character for Nintendo -- cool and wide-appealing and sophisticated ... without being so violent and over-the-top that it didn't fit in with Nintendo's overall image.

Not really surprising, but kind of worries me. The last game I remember getting an Adult Only rating was Manhunt 2. & If remember correctly Nintendo has a zero tolerance for AO (here in the US that is) which is why Manhunt has to be toned down for an M rating.

If the ESRB ends up giving that rating to the NA verison, the game might suffer the same fate. But probably not since the violence is much worse in Mad World (in my personal opinion) and that game got an M rating.

I don't think we will ever see violence being toned down on Nintendo consoles again. This time they really aim to grab the "hardcore" gamers, as seen with ZombieU being an exclusive launch title and all.

They would probably want their kiddy image to be gone for good after this upcoming generation.

Nintendo has a "kiddy" image because by and large they are more kid-centric than the other two console makers who market primarily to teenagers/adult males first and foremost.

Also most Nintendo franchises that end up defining the platform are cartoony/colorful/Disney-esque in nature.

A Ninja Gaiden port with more blood is not going to change that really. It doesn't hurt though.

That is reality only in the mind of Nintendos detractors.

Nintendo has always been a family oriented console aimed at providing something for "everyone".  People began mass labling it as kiddie last gen as insult out of spite for its success with the Wii.

Cartoony/colorful in no way equals childish. Its a matter of style and design for those who have more taste in artstyle than whatever looks the most grimy and violent. I think that pretty much defines the difference between Nintendo fans and others. Nintendo fans see more colors and spectrums in gaming.

Nintendo has made very few games that were "aimed" specicially at children.

Their games aren't aimed at age groups. They are aimed at different types of gamers which is why they have such a large variety.

You sound like a PR guy.

Nintendo from a 1st party perspective has always maintained a kids first approach. "Everyone" is only a factor when you include 3rd party games. Sure, by "everyone" Nintendo can attract seniors, fathers/mothers for their kids, early teens, but the main audience is tweens and younger. Some demographics have more significance then others in the term "everyone".

Most "core" Nintendo gamers, males aged 18-28, most likely own a PC/360/PS3 to compensate.

The Disney esque mascots, the really easy difficulty of all their games, and lack of deep lore in storytelling (since kids really dont care about story) suggests they appeal to kids first above all else. Im not saying go Gears of War Style, but they certainly create child friendly mascots and settings in the games.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. I was a kid once, grew up on Nintendo consoles and handhelds all the way up to DS and Gamecube personally. But now I require more from my games so I detracted to 360. Not that its a big deal to Nintendo. Human beings breed fast and new kids are ready to take my place in a heartbeat. Nintendo is the perfect company to grow up with, again theres nothing wrong with that.

But its hard to stand by and see adults such as yourself twist Nintendos approach to gaming to suit your needs and justify yourself at your age playing Nintendo consoles primarily over the other options. If your a grown guy and still love Nintendo games, thats fine, but dont pretend that their games were made for your age group at heart because they simply arent.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

The kiddy image has nothing to do with this. Nintendo platforms have had violent/bloody games for 20 years now (almost) beginning with Mortal Kombat 2 which was uncensored on the SNES. I remember that BMX game on the GameCube had FMVs with nude female strippers whereas that content was censored by Sony on the PS2.

Nintendo generally doesn't censor, after the Mortal Kombat debacle of 1993, they basically washed their hands of telling developers what their games can have content wise and leave that to the ratings board.

Censorship is not why they have a kiddy image.

Then why weren't Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2 rated AO? o.O

Japan's CERO must have gotten stricter on graphic violence recently, i guess. In America, of course, all violence is welcome.

More interesting will be how European countries rate Razor's Edge

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Most influential if you're a dirty console gaming peasant maybe.

And how dare you mention the RE remake before Eternal Darkness when talking about mature GC games? :P

Anyway, Nintendo has always been labled as kiddy by fans of opposing consoles or, before that, old home computer fanboys. What started with the Wii was the whole casual hardcore meme, which is ironic, because during the GC days, people comlained it didn't have the 'mass appeal' of the PS2.

If Ninja Gaiden 2 wasn't a problem I don't see anything in Razor's Edge that's different. Japan has a different ratings board.

Basically in the West you can't get an AO rating unless you start getting into nudity/sex (ripping off people's heads is OK, but simulated sex and prolonged nudity is not).

The only way Razor's Edge can get an AO rating here is if Ryu and Ayane have full-on nude sex scene in the game. Shredding thousands of people to death is OK though, lol.

I don't think you really are reading correctly here and just getting emotional for no reason. "Don't shoot the messenger".

I've sat through these debates probably when you were in diapers. I remember when Star Fox came out (the original SNES one, not even talking about the N64 one) and there was some backlash among some people that it had "talking furry animals" as the pilots.

Really though would the game industry even be better off if Nintendo made the same hyper-violent/space marine/color devoid titles that everyone else makes? What's wrong with being more kid-friendly? I think if most people are honest they'll admit their most cherished game memories are from their childhood, not from the most recent blockbuster FPS.

No emotion here. Don't insinuate what my reasonsing is. I'm just poiting out the facts.

Sure people like that "existed". They "existed" and still exist for Sony and Microsoft as well but they were always a minority. It was never like it is now with so much hatred and disdain throught the gaming world.

Nintendo has always sported the "most"(content wise) violent games of every generation on their system.

Killer Instince, Duke Nukem Zero Hour, Turok 1,2,3 and Rage Wars, Bio Freaks, etc on the N6

Rsident Evil Reamke, Zero, 2, 3, Code Veronice, 4, Geist, Eternal Darkness etc on the N64.

Red Steel, The Calling, Jo-on the Grudge, House of the dead 2 & 3, Overkill, Tenchu 4, Madworld etc on the Wii

The Kiddie claims have never been true. Its just one of those things people continue to insist on because they can't think of any other insults that they could get to walk. Nintendo has always tried to make games that everyone could play.

Sure they've been given a kiddy image but them making kiddie games has never been true as kiddie would mean that the games were made specifically for children. They make games that are not restricted by age and that people of all ages can have fun with.

Smash Brother is the best exmaple. It has to be one of the most hardcore games in existence. Is it kiddie?

Nintendo has a "kiddy" image because they in part cultivate it, it's profitable for them, so what's wrong with it? I think that's its own debate ... is there even anything wrong with having that image?

There's been violent games on Nintendo platforms for ages, that's not why people deem the platform kiddy or not.
