Teenage Mutant Ninja... whoa wait! It's said Nintendrone. Sorry, my mistake!

"One of Nintendo’s most glaring mistakes with the Wii U was its online interface."
Okay, I think he meant the Wii there, 'cuase the WiiU isn't even out yet...

While I do give him props for some points, but as Mr. Khan said, software is the big go-to, wich I didn't see he went further with it and left it for so called another article.

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

Microsoft and Sony are not releasing new consoles to compete with Nintendo for the casual market which Nintendo dominated with the Wii.

It's Nintendo who is trying to enter in a market that already have two established platforms.

So this question makes no sense.

I also think Sony and MS are going to have a difficult time competing with Nintendo, but think he is off on the main reason behind it. I really feel that simply by having Sony and MS hold off on new consoles and giving Nintendo what seems to be at least a year head start (as the new Sony and MS consoles have yet to even be revealed), they've all but conceded the next generation to Nintendo already. Getting a head start is VERY important, moreso than a lot of people think. Just ask the Xbox 360 and the PS2, oh and the 3DS. The extra time gives that console time to establish a decent game library, a userbase that commits to you more and more instead of your competitor, and also gives third parties extra time to become comfortable with developing for the system. You also get a head start on the inevitable price drops to follow because the hardware you manufacture becomes cheaper to make.

Now, if the games that come out during this extra year or so are not up to par, then it wouldn't matter as much, but in the Wii U's case, you got three HUGE franchises in NSMB, Wii Fit, and Dragon Quest X (in Japan) which should all release during this stretch where Nintendo will have NO direct competition. This trio will guarantee at the very least decent sales out the gate, and probably have the potential to sell a combined 50 million units alone. You've also got a launch lineup that looks to be the strongest in recent history, stronger even than the Wii. Wii's biggest titles then were a Zelda port, and a game that many described as a "demo." Wii U will already come out the gate with Pikmin 3, NSMB, Wii Fit, Just Dance, Zombi, Rayman, Lego City Stories, Scribblenauts, P-100, not to mention a plethora of third party ports that could sway some of the more stubborn core gamers that still cling to the 360 and PS3.

So what will gamers do? Will they really be able to resist waiting out at least a year for the mere possibility of Sony and MS revealing new consoles, sticking with their current HD consoles that are already starting to slow on the new releases? I don't see many doing that, at least not without getting a Wii U while they wait. By the time Sony and MS do release their new consoles, I feel they are going to have a hard time giving incentive for gamers to make the move from Nintendo to them, as the Wii U will already have an established library of games. Not to mention, the graphic leap likely won't be as significant this time, as Wii U's graphics should be viewed as "good enough." Sony and MS will almost certainly have better looking games, but will they be able to warrant an additional $500-$700 for them (console plus controllers?) Especially in these tough economic times, I don't think so.. Compare this to a console that will likely cost somewhere in the $250-$350 range, and for many people, won't require they buy additional controllers since the Wii U will support Wiimotes, and Nintendo gains a quick advantage in a depressed market.

Sony and MS are putting themselves in a very dangerous position by giving Nintendo this head start. Even if they released at the same time, I'd say they'd have their work cut out for them, but now they must overcome what could be anywhere from a 10-20 million head start, all the whlie trying to convince gamers who have already set camp with Nintendo to spend another $500-$700 on their consoles. Remember, the Wii was the LAST of the current trio of consoles to be released, and it has eclipsed them by 30 million. The ironic thing is that while everyone dissed Nintendo for remaining in the "last generation" with Wii, now it seems Sony and MS will be doing the same with their PS3 and 360. The only difference is these are old consoles that have already reached, or at least neared, the saturation points, whereas Wii was a least a new console based around a relatively new idea of the 3D motion controller and a retro-esque twist on modern games. I think it is very possible that we could be seeing another generation similar to the PS2 where Sony completely ran away with the market while Nintendo and MS fought for the scraps, except the roles of Sony and Nintendo will now be swapped.

An article biased towards the Wii U?

What a relic.

...

i doubt this year start will be as helpful as you think.  excluding first party, the games coming to wii U are ps360 ports.  unless nintendo can convince loads of publishers to develop nintendo exclusives (ala zombieU) it's not the wii U that has a head start, it's the ps360.  and so far, any support from activision and EA (let alone exclusive support) have been luke warm at best.

so to answer your question of will gamers be able to wait for sony and MS to announce their hardware?  A) we'll have the announcement by E3 next year at the latest. B) until nintendo actually starts getting some exclusives that really demand my attention the wii U is absolutely easy to ignore.  i already have 2 systems that play batman AC, Mass effect 3, Assasins Creed III, CoD blops2, GTA5, bioshock infinite,..  i (and around 100M other households) really don't need another machines that plays those games.

..and do you honestly think the likes of wii fit 2, just dance, lego city stories, or pikmin are really going to sway the ps360 core?  first off, just dance is multiplat.  and lol at wii fit 2, pikmin, or even the like of NSMB wii U or any other nintendo property swaying the core.  if the core were interested in those the ps360 wouldn't have outlived the wii in the end.  those systems thrived despite nintendo's success specifically because nintendo doesn't giving the core what it wants...and they still aren't.  zombieU is the only thing i see on wii U of interest so far and one game just isn't enough.

No, no.  The real question is will wii U actually get the ps4/nextBox multiplats the article assumes it will get.  last i heard epic said wii U is a unreal engine 3 machine and will not support it with unreal engine 4.  if wii U doesn't get MSony's next gen multiplats, the wii U is DoA to me.

nintendo had better hope it can strike another cord with the casuals again.  the one thing the article said that i can absolutely agree with - "it’s actually quite difficult to create something that resonates with the masses.."  nintendo's past success is no guarantee of future performance.

Good write-up, and some really strong points. Those that argue aganst your "opinion" are just idiots and expect to always see a 'Nintendo is doomed' article whenever they boot-up a computer. The simple fact of the matter is that Nintendo has a plan for its success and ligitimacy in the gaming world and people don't like to beilieve that.People expect Nintendo to be uncessful, but Nintendo remains the dominate force in console and handeld gaming.

Let's forget about next-gen consoles for a while and apply some of your points to the current 'fight' in the portable gaming market. Does Sony and its all powerful Vita have an answer for the underpowered casual gaming 3DS? The simple answer is No. Now apply that same thinking to consoles and I think your article has a lotta weight behind it.

The question still remains, can the wii u compete? Shakes 8 ball, " all signs point to no"'.

That is not the question. Nintendo is on top overall everywhere. The question is can Sony and Microsoft.

The Wii has been dead to 3rd party's for a lot longer than the sales of the system has slow down.  Right now, it's getting the same treatment as the vita, ports and more ports. There is over 130 million PS3/Xbox360 What makes them think these people are going to drop their friends list, their trophies and gamer score and a superior online service to make the jump for ports? Wii u is also in danger of launching out side of the 200-250 sweet spot causal player needs. So the core players is their only hope of this thing taking off like a rocket. I guess no one remembers the 64 and GameCube days where the spent 15 years dead last. So no, the questions isn't can the ps3 and xbox can keep up it's if the Wii U can. Also don't for get that the PS2 sold nearly 50 million into this gen. I don't think the wii u stands a chance.
