If Sony really cuts the price again, even though SCE lost 1.2 billion and the whole company 6 billion last year, I will just laugh. I mean it doesn't matter to anyboydy who sold 66.7 and who sold 66.8 million. 3rd paty support will be a given this late into the generation.

Sony NEEDS the money. Why not redesign the console without a picecut like MS did in 2010 and start to actually make some money? What is wrong with Sony that they are willing to lose soooo much money (and they are already in a not-healthy position) just to get to 2nd place?

It is just against every rational thought.

The PS3 all together has been a giant fuck up on Sony's part.

Id imagine theyll be profiting quite a bit with the new model. Its tiny and looks fairly cheap tbh. With a 16GB model they really cant keep prices the same. It has to be introduced at a low price point. With that, you just can't keep the other models way higher like they already are.

I agree with you.

The point I don't get is the 16 GB model. Who wanted one of those? It is obvious Sony offers less with this model so they basically forced themselves to reduce the entry price. If the 160GB HDD is the only difference between these models, I don't get the point at all. How much is a 160 GB HDD for Sony these days? $20? $40? So they save $40 for this model and offer the console for $70 - $100 less. (from $249 --> $149 / $179)

Maybe you are right and Sony is like: "Okay, we fucked up with the PS3, now let's see if we can at least make the best out of it for the PS4." But even that would be stupid IMO. I mean you are looking at a 500 Million USD - 750 Million USD investment with this price cut. I just can't believe such a company is blinded by their ego in such a crucial fincial situation.

The price cut doesn't have to be $70-$100. They could drop only $50 to $199.

Id imagine they've noticed how well the 4GB 360 does and want a piece of that pie. It'll be a cheaper model for the more casual crowd and judging by the lineup for this Year, its certainly the target. Finally being able to break into that sub-$199 market with a new model and focus probably sounds brilliant to the higher ups.

It is indeed a great occasion Gilgamesh. A good excuse for going out for dinner tonight!!!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

i think the gap will be below 1m be the end of next yr. 2013. looking past that, i don't really see much difference between the yr. over yr., even with Sony continuing to release new ip for the PS3.

i doubt the gap will b below or hit 1m before or after Oct. cause the gap is only 40k a wk.

Sony needs to keep the price the same but just make better bundles...

MS completely kills sony when it comes to value added bundles. When i bought my 360 i got 5 free games! and it wasnt shitty games : Fifa 12, Forza 3 (boxed) + Halo Reach, Gears of War 2, and Fable 3 (downloadable). Thats amazing value something that Sony has failed to offer this entire gen. There was a GOW3 and U2 bundle at one point but that was insanely expensive...

If i was a new buyer looking for a console and 360 has such amazing bundles...its a no brainer what to pick.

And cutting the price doesnt help sony, I mean seriously who wants to buy a stand alone console? And then when the do actual have bundles the cost becomes too high.

This is why MS have not cut the base price of the 360 imo. They can easily afford to but they choose to offer more value with kinect bundles and market specific gaming bundles.

Based on last shipments three months ago 360 was at 67.2m and PS3 was at 63.9m. A difference of 3.3m.

What is interesting is that this gap seems to have closed within the 3 months since the last reports to the point now we are around 2m.

So while acording to vgchartz the number is 2m i'd bet they are way out again. My guess is that the Sony numbers will overtracked again this quarter. If they were doing as good as vgc seems to think they are then they would have no need to release a third version of their console. If the gap was around 40k a week as vgc claim then thats nearly 200k a month in ps3's favor. AT that rate it would take 10 months to over-take the 360.
Which isn't going to happen.

So like with the previous 2 quarters I expect this one to be no different from them. 360 will have done slightly better then predicted and PS3 will have done a bit worse then predicted. Then we will hear those arguments how there are 1.2m 360's on shelves and 400k ps3's on shelves. Then rinse and repeat for the following quarter.

- $99 Xbox 360
- 360 will have the most big retail exclusives that'll appeal to a variety of people (halo 4, forza horizon, and dance central 3)
- limited edition bundles will go on sale and get people to buy, namely the star wars kinect bundle
- MS will simply have an edge in the marketing department as always, more people will simply be aware of the xbox 360

Really...?  It there a $99 Xbox 360 that I can buy off the shelves and start playing?  This is news to me.

Let's hope it won't last.
