Forums - Nintendo - Skyward Sword was the worst Zelda I have played. We need to talk about this.

It's actually the only Zelda game I've played. I have seen my brother beat all the other console ones since the N64 though. I just never felt like playing them before. I only felt like watching someone else play it. Then my brother bought Skyward Sword and I decided to give it a try. It was pretty good. I only played it like 12 hours though. I stopped playing it just because I always do that. I rarely finish my games. The game is pretty good though. lol

Agreed. The side-quests were fun but they should have been optional bonus quests, with rewards.

I also agree that motion controls were tacked on for tight-rope. But for bombs, it's the same concept as the sword. You are Link. That was the point. And why not the bird? Maybe you felt like controlling a whole bird was a bit much? I could understand that. But I actually found flying the bird fun, that's me. And I'm not bs'ing, I actually was eager to get on the bird to fly and nosedive and flap its wings and do it better. Maybe there should be an option to go on relaxed mode or something.

The tight-rope didn't work well for me at all, so I kind of agree on that one.

Well all of those options work better with buttons, making them motion controls (mostly referring to bombs) just makes the game cumbersome, and most people (myself included) don't have a huge area to flail their arms about, making it very awkward and unpleasant to do all these controls.  I don't dislike it becuase I'm lazy, I dislike it becuase I find it unpleasant.  before actually PLAYING Skyward Sword, I was super hyped for the game, really looking forward to 'motion controls done right', but in the end it was just gimmicky nonsense.  I'll take Twilight Princess or Wind Waker over this any day.

Of course they work better with buttons. Remember the post I made to DarthVolod? Buttons are more convenient than motion controls, it's just a fact. But, they may or may not be more immersive. As the tech evolves, the hope is that motion controls become the most immersive experience since they have you mimic the game character, creating a physical bond with the virtual world. It is awkward and unpleasant for us, because we're trad gamers. We aren't used to doing this kind of thing and it makes us feel stupid and it isn't as responsive yet as we would hope for it to be. So I know it's not because you're lazy.

If S.T.A.G.E. is right, and gimmicks aren't necessarily a bad thing, then why are we still calling things "gimmicky nonsense"? Do you mean it's just broken tech that doesn't work? If it's purely a gimmick with no added value, I'd agree. But motion controls show potential, and Skyward Sword was an adequate proof of concept, it just wasnt fully mature. For that reason I understand that TP or WW would please you more and that's OK.

Problem is, there is a sense that SS got other things done wrong apart from Motion Controls, and I feel that that's being thrown in the mix and affecting your opinion of Motion controls. Now I'm not saying SS is a bad game, but there are things about it that I found lacked substance, and those would have probably compensated to make you less hateful of the Motion controls. But as it was, SS was kind of missing the mark on both aspects: Motion controls and Substance.

the motion controls in SS didnt bother me as much, but they sure as hell were not as cool as i thought they would be.  I think the only core game that did motion gaming right(sans FPS) was RS2 IMHO

Some of the best arcade games were motion controlled.

The raft one was perfect when I was on a date in high school

The snowboarding and Horse riding games in the arcade were awesome too. I think motion control is best when you are playing in a group, but the motion control in Zelda SS is also fun. Maybe not for rolling bombs and walking tightropes, but fighting enimies is pretty good with it.

I admit those games were fun, but they were gimmicks for casual use.

a lot of people have a dirty mouth here, at least you should be more respectful even if youre opinion is negative, i could say that lots of post here are pathetic, biased and dont really do justice to the work and ideas that were put in this game...but im not going to say that...

If you can apply the below definition of gimmick to that rowing game, then...

gim·mick

   [gim-ik]  Show IPA
noun
1.
an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increaseappeal.

the PS3 is a gimmick and I'm being dead serious.

And these are all gimmicks: http://www.bmigaming.com/games-newitems.htm

And so are these:

All gimmicks. Every single one of them.

The PS3 isn't a gimmick, the Move is. The Wii's purpose and existence is a gimmick.

The PS3's existence is based off of Nintendo's existence, more specifically the NES and Famicom's existence. Both systems were propelled by a man by the name of Gunpei Yokoi, the man who created the Virtual Boy. The first Nintendo cartidge system was made to capitalize on games and toys, and prior to all the NES/Duck Hunt craze Nintendo made a Donkey Kong arcade which became heavily popular, with all its flash, and some alley shooting montages for amusement parks (read the book "Game Over" it talks about that and other Businesses Nintendo sought right before the NES).

So, the PS3 is actually the sewage of where video games ended up, with little appeal. Motion control brings all that appeal back to the systems by making them more suitable for people to enjoy.

You like that? You like when I say shit like that?

Nintendo products were considered toys before the Playstation turned them into profitable multimedia hub. Cell Phones were just phones before Apple create Iphones and Black Berrys came along. A multimedia hub isn't a gimmick, it's a legit device where you can play your games, DVD's, MP3's, Video chat and more. The PS3 is the savior of the Blu Ray format and the cause of affordability for families around the world, just as they and Microsoft (following behind) were for DVD's. Motion controls brings casual appeal back to gaming. Yes....thats true...it increased the market size by allowing people to hate gaming or find it to be too much of a challenge to finally have fun with it without complexities. So? Kinect one-upped that and Microsoft is using those legs to stay ahead of the PS3. The PS3 is the only losing console thats been able to stay close to its main competitor primarily off of multimedia and core titles nearly tripling the sales of the Gamecube if it hasn't already.
