If Nintendo sticks with the Wii mote next gen have hope. They will drop it like they drop everything else. A gimmick is a gimmick.

They drop everything else? Like wat.

It's Sony and MS that pushed them out of anything you may be insinuating. These two companies don't care about games as proven by their first consoles in the marketplace, they had 0 internal software support for their machines. MS bought Halo off of Bungie, and Sony had nothing in the PSX era except later in the console's lifetime.

The lifeline of Sony was 3rd parties, and the lifeline of Microsoft is Sony. Apart from 3rd parties, these two are worthless.

Only Nintendo could survive without 3rd party support, on its own. True testament to its ability to entertain.

Now, thankfully, Sony has upped its game and with studios like ND and Team Ico, and the evolution of Gran Turismo, they could sustain a console on their own. But as it were, Sony and Microsofts' success were not meant to be, and are founded on dishonesty and the ability to leverage large sums of money.

I hope it bites them back. What goes around comes around.

Yes, because you don't think after having Sony supply the audio chips for the SNES and them co-developing this CD hybrid that they weren't in the talks about what the deal would be.

No they didn't talk about it at all, and Sony simply put in fine-print that they would be getting rights to ALL of Nintendo's intellectual properties sold on the Playstation.

Of course Nintendo walked out are you kidding?

Yes...Sony doesn't give a shit about first party which is why they have more successful new IP's than Microsoft and Nintendo. I'll leave you to that belief.

As it were, I'll repeat what I wrote:

They now give a shit, but their foundation is on not giving a shit. As such, they were not the natural evolution, but got flucky. Just like the Wii got flucky and is not a natural evolution. It's sad to me that history played this way. I wish it would have been different and that the market, circumstance and wiser decisions would have led to the outcome where Nintendo is king of both casual and core offerings, as it was meant to be.

3rd parties made it happen for Sony in its origin.

Money made it happen for Microsoft in its origin.

The biggest losers were SEGA and Nintendo. Thank heavens Nintendo is still in the game, but sadly they came out the other side emasculated.

Nintendo never called for renegotiation on time. They sat through it until the end and I highly doubt the time in which the contract was read and opted out on was relatively short. They were smart not to take it, but at the same time Sony would've been doing all the work anyway. If I was them I would've wanted a piece of the pie as well.

From what I understood, Sony was doing all the work behind Nintendo's back in the first place. It was super shady from the start.

"As an extension of the agreement, Sony made its most ambitious attempt at squeezing into the video game market by signing a deal with Nintendo that would allow it to develop and use CD-ROM drive technology in home console entertainment applications. Furthermore, games for Nintendo's forthcoming Super NES would be fully compatible with Sony's CD-based console."

"Sony quickly began development on its home console in secret using the proposed "Super Disc technology". The technology was not scheduled to be released for another 18 months. Sony's console was initially called the "Super Disc", and was supposed to be able to play both SNES cartridges and CD-ROMs, of which Sony was to be the "sole worldwide licenser," as stated in the contract."

"Nintendo president, Hiroshi Yamauchi thought CD-ROM technology and multimedia would be a vital part of the future of video games. He increased Nintendo's research budget to facilitate the exploration of this new future.

Nintendo was searching for a format to expand its multimedia endeavors, however for some reason Nintendo did not read the contract closely or simply didn't heed enough caution. Hiroshi Yamauchi and Co. thought they were playing Sony, but in reality, Sony would come to play Nintendo like a fiddle."

"In its attempt to stay competitive with Sega, the convergence machines Nintendo today criticizes, were once the waters Nintendo intentionally sailed. (Although, with the drama that would soon follow, it's no surprise Nintendo developed a bias against them.)"

"All was looking just fine for Nintendo until it found that the deal they had struck with Sony way back in 1988 granted Sony the right to control and license all the CD-based games for the "Super Disc". Nintendo was now to be at the mercy of Sony and its "Super Disc", which could play SNES carts and Sony-manufactured CDs. Nintendo, understandably, began to get worried.

When it became clear that CD-ROMs weren't a fluke and could turn into a major business, Nintendo Co. Ltd. president Hiroshi Yamauchi realized that the proposed alliance with Sony meant giving up the very foundation of Nintendo's business - absolute control over license and manufacturing."

"In June of 1991, at the Chicago CES, Sony officially announced the Play Station (space intentional). As originally announced, the Play Station would have a port to play Super Nintendo cartridges, as well as a CD-ROM drive that would play 680 megabyte Sony Super Discs."

"By this point, Nintendo had just about all it could take. On top of the deal signed in 1988, Sony had also retained all rights to the SNES sound chip, which further exacerbated Nintendo. Sony had Nintendo by the balls..."

Nuff said.

Again, I hope this bites them back big time.

im sorry but this is BS, plain and simple. Sony actually had a video game development team. BEFORE they even got into the console making buisness. It was called Sony imagesoft and they made Hook which was one of the the most acclaimed games at the time which ironically enough was a SNES exclusive i think. As for not having internal software? Did you even own a PS?? Parappa the Rapper, Wipeout, Xtreme games, Cool Boarders, Jet Moto all say hi

These were not good games in comparison to what 1st parties like Sega and Nintendo offered at the time. I'm sorry, but nobody could support the argument that anyone bought a Playstation for the 1st party games except for Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot. 2 IPs, one that came very late in the cycle (gran turismo). So as much as you might hate to hear it, the last thing it is is BS.

We all know that the PSX sold thanks to Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, Namco and other friends.

And Sony Imagesoft who? Yeah, don't think I recall.

Sony's first party was always great, just highly underrated because they were drowning in a sea of third party from the very beginning. Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Crash Bandicoot (at one time), Hot Shots Golf, Coolboarders, Starhawk, Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal, Ico, Sotc, God of War and the list goes on and on and on. Sony never commercially pushed their titles out in everyones face becasue they always had so many. Sony's first party is finally getting love because Microsoft made deals to get all the third party Sony had rounded up under them as well. Sony already had a major list of beloved titles before the PS3, Microsoft just made it that much easier for those who cared to notice. Back last gen no one cared what was first party or third. Microsofts dependence on third party is rather what has made people so interested in where the games come from since the majority of their top titles are not from under them and havent been even since last gen.

SEGA was one of my favorite companies, but you can even see it in their titles today, the worlds are generic and not carefully planned. Something that would pass in the 90's but definitely not with the passing of the millenium. Sega had first party for every genre and they made Nintendo look weak in that respect as well. Sega didn't have casual appeal though, they lost it after the Genesis era. That console was just too hardcore and it was also a generation behind in format which caused it to get pirated worse than any other console in recent memory. I mean the Wii's pirating was bad, but the Dreamcasts was just god awful.

WTF? Jeto Moto was the key competition for Wave racers. Wave Racers had the edge because of the analog stick which made its driving smoother. Jeto Moto had the cooler licensed soundtracks and had an edgier feel. Wipeout was also hot too. The PSX sold thanks to all partners including Sony taking media to a new level. Thank goodness for Inafune being inspired by Nintendo in that respect to petition the creation of a videogame console to Sony.
