This whole 'what is a gimmick and what is not' debate is really just an argue of semantics. Like I said way earlier, gimmick has been used in a negative connotation only towards Nintendo. For other companies it is innovation...Pot, meet kettle.

Exactly. I think this whole conversation goes to show that anything Nintendo is a gimmick. Nintendo Video is a gimmick, but DVD-Playback isn't.

Other definition: Anything that's popular or a sensation is a gimmick. (disproven)

There are so many ways the words are twisted to fit an a priori it's almost horrendous.

All this because SS is a prime example of Motion controls put to good use, proved that the technology is still not fully ready and offers an incomplete experiences lets certain gamers think  they can call it a gimmick.

These people don't understand what they are saying and are just using the biases to think over things.

A proper way to say it would be:

Skyward Sword took motions controls to a whole new level, applying the tech to most of link's actions from swordfighting, shield defense, bomb throwing and remote-controlled items. This goes hand in hand with other zeldas which made unique use of new hardware features on a Nintendo system (the DS for the boomerang using touch controls).

Sadly, the technology is not fully mature, so there were a few cases where the motion controls made the experience a little awkward and left a sour taste. Also, in certain cases it felt a little out of place to use motion controls to control on screen movements such as the bird flying and whatnot.

Also, being used to traditional controls, it took some getting used to the new input to on-screen reaction delay, as compared to button controls. In that sense, it also made the experience difficult. However, with the right mindset, we could get a richer experiences by changing our expectations and appreciating the benefits of motion controls.

Ultimately, this is a good try, and motion controls have much potential, but sadly the experience wasn't complete.

_______________

End of comments. Where's the use of the word gimmick? Nowhere. Needed? Not anywhere.

DVD and DVD playback go hand in hand. The PS2 games used DVD format so why would it not be able to play ANY DVD disc. By that logic the cameras in 3DS are a gimmick, the Ninty video is a gimmick, web browsing, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

If photos are not used in games, they would be gimmicks. The Nintendo video is a gimmick, yes as much as DVD playback is.

Great, so we agree.

No, i dont believe those are gimmicks, i believe all those features are the natural progression of video game consoles. They just happen to be seperate from actual gameplay. Me personally im all for it. Consoles wouldnt be as popular as they are without it.

I'm all for it too, but that doesn't mean that, to gameplay, they aren't gimmicks. You said it yourself, they're "seperate from actual gameplay", so there you have it. On a vg consoles, they are gimmicks, just very well accepted. But it becomes funny when something is actually not a gimmick that it's rejected and called one, that's what blows the mind.

fair enough, there are some instances where motion controls can be used as a gimmick where it doesnt add anything to gameplay, like having to shake the controller in DKCreturns just to freaking roll, thats BS and the devs just added that just to say they have motion controls in the game. THe same thing in Zelda where you have to balance the controller on the tight rope spots, pure nonsense. and im not picking on Ninty i hated when ND did it in the orginal Uncharted. thats just me

I didn't like TP. I thought it was way too boring.

I've played SS for about 4 hours, and so far I like it much more than Twilight Spa- I mean Twilight Princess

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
