Equate that to real life. Who uses motion controls like the Wii's?  Second of all lets go into your world and instead of calling a DVD player a format and calling it a gimmick. Now take the gimmick out of the PS2 and what do you have?

A gimmick is a novelty, essentially you're calling your DVD player a gimmick. If it wasn't for the PS2 DVD players wouldn't  have been affordable to the masses.

But Ur still doing it rong. It's a gimmick on a videogame console. On an Entertainment system, it's a value-add, since entertainment means any form of entertainment, be it music, trad games, motion games, books, videos you kname it!

So in the end, this is all just a big play on words and a huge pissing contest. If it were me, we would all just stop, look at things as they actually were, and move right along. The S.T.A.G.E. is set for a new generation where we put the past behind us and stop calling consoles gimmicks and spewing things left and right like that.

The 8th generation is looking bright, with Nintendo fostering its own sustainable ecosystem alongside the twins. It will be a big win for everyone. Why some people are against that is beyond me, but really? Suit yourself

My PS3's bluray player almost get's no use. But my Wii and Kinnect get used at least a few days out of the month. I have a feeling more people have played with and had fun with the Wii than people who have watched a Blu-ray movie. (I'm not trying to call blu-ray a gimmick, just making a point) Though motion control may have been gimmicky in its conception. It no longer is. A lot of great games and platforms are built on it now.

Same can be said about motion control sensors on smartphones and on the Wii. You know the drill.

It is not a gimmick on a videogame company. DVD's were the natural evolution for formats ever since we went to CD's. The Saturn used it, The Dreamcast used it, PC's used it. DVD's became the norm on the PS2 and the Xbox. CD's were getting ripped online and people would pirate. What would you expect Sony to do if they stuck with CD's?  

The Wii mote isn't practical. Nintendo went back to a controller as simple as that.

Your Blu Ray player may get no use, but because of Sony taking the risk on the PS3 just as they did on the PS2 it thrived. There are more Blu Ray players in the world today than Wii's. That might be a tough pill to swallow for some but a DVD player is a format and will always be practical until the next evolutionary format knocks it off. I think Blu Ray is the last format before full digital.

You're mixing two things up. The DVD format is suitable for media capacity for gaming software, but I already told you Yamauchi was inclined on optical media until Sony got in the way. The DVD-Playback, however, is a gimmick as it is a novelty injected into the Playstation (much like the gyroscopes on the Wii) to attract consumers. It had nothing to do with gaming. For a gaming console that's a gimmick. For an entertainment system, it's a value-add.

So, in the end, the evolution you were talking about was bullocks, and the crazy thing about it is that it is the pillar of your worldview when it comes to the world of gaming. Microsoft > Sony (or the other depending on the mood) > Nintendo, when I just proved to you that Nintendo wanted to go high-end, much like they did with the N64 (it was more powerful than the Playstation I might add), but Sony got in the way and double-crossed them.

So, where's the evolution now? Especially when I emphasized that 3rd parties made Sony breathe during the 6th gen, your evolution is more like an infancy while Nintendo was a fully formed adult, was so ever since they entered the console business (as their 1st party offerings on the NES can prove).

You are free to disagree but facts are facts. This is my last post. I have better things to do that argue for an hour over whether a format is a gimmick. 

Geez, I never said the format was a gimmick... I said the DVD movie-playback was a gimmick, in response to your "Sony is the evolution of gaming by means of multimedia".

I will read it. But understand you're reading me wrong.

EDIT: I just read the article, and I don't disagree with it. How does that make movie-playback less of a gimmick? Because it leads to social acceptance? Rather, this is perfectly in line with what I was saying. (A novelty used in order to attract appeal)

Not sure about the world, but in the US there are more homes with Wiis than Bluray players(including PS3s). So I am not sure how you can say that the Wii is a gimmick.
