Multimedia isn't a gimmick, it isn't a novelty. It's a product people actually make use of on a daily basis and Sony and Microsoft knew it would take over the home eventually because thats the evolution of tech. If thats a gimmick then so is a home computer, Blackberry, Ipod, tablets and things like that. People seriously use in their house and have actual use. I haven't bought a stand-alone Blu Ray because of the PS3 even though its old, it still works and I can put my files on it from my computer. From a tecchie perspective yes. From a gaming perspecive, the pyramid is reversed.

My PS3's bluray player almost get's no use. But my Wii and Kinnect get used at least a few days out of the month. I have a feeling more people have played with and had fun with the Wii than people who have watched a Blu-ray movie. (I'm not trying to call blu-ray a gimmick, just making a point) Though motion control may have been gimmicky in its conception. It no longer is. A lot of great games and platforms are built on it now.

Your Blu Ray player may get no use, but because of Sony taking the risk on the PS3 just as they did on the PS2 it thrived. There are more Blu Ray players in the world today than Wii's. That might be a tough pill to swallow for some but a DVD player is a format and will always be practical until the next evolutionary format knocks it off. I think Blu Ray is the last format before full digital.
