The PS3's existence is based off of Nintendo's existence, more specifically the NES and Famicom's existence. Both systems were propelled by a man by the name of Gunpei Yokoi, the man who created the Virtual Boy. The first Nintendo cartidge system was made to capitalize on games and toys, and prior to all the NES/Duck Hunt craze Nintendo made a Donkey Kong arcade which became heavily popular, with all its flash, and some alley shooting montages for amusement parks (read the book "Game Over" it talks about that and other Businesses Nintendo sought right before the NES).
So, the PS3 is actually the sewage of where video games ended up, with little appeal. Motion control brings all that appeal back to the systems by making them more suitable for people to enjoy.
