That has some weight to it. The saturation of the US market is not as high as with Wii and 360. PS3 also has reach in a ton of markets. PS3 had a terrible image at first even though it was fixed shortly after, public opinion persisted. Even in 2009 my brother and I were arguing over the game selection. I didn't get my PS3 till the year after but he had a 360 for a couple years already. I was interested in PS3 and while at a video store he brought this issue up, so I started comparing what was on the shelves identifying exclusives and multiplats as well as the number of titles. There was no disparancy, but he didn't give way to the idea at first but shortly after I'm guessing because he had quite the choice of games to suggest when I did buy a PS3. I didn't even know much about the game selection then, most fellow college students had an Xbox but they had very few games outside of CoD and Halo. My brother and I are very core gamers and have been playing games together all our lives on various systems.

It's kind of similar to the price sentiment. Yes the PS3 was expensive, $500/$600, while the 360 was $400/$500(+$50/$60 a year for XBL) but its way cheaper now. Even after the price drops people still had that image in their head that it was more expensive than 360 even though it wasn't (obviously both are more than the Wii though).

Seems too black and white to say casuals are supporting MS and core supporting PS3. Multiplat sales this year show the core are more then representing the 360. Ever thought a mixture of tech enthusiasts are buying the PS3? Because its software and especially exclusive sales this year leave more to be desired. 

I think in 2013 any PS3 price cut will have the buzz taken away by WiiU gaining momentum and the announcement of the next Xbox and PS4.

Oh? The vgchartz home page shows 360 having a 2 million lead. Ergo being but-hurt is impossible. 

Last year I got my PS3 because it was a good price, and there were next to unlimited great games available, so I picked one up. And because I was getting kind of bored. I needed a better hardcore console. And PS3 delivered. I suspect many others are doing the same thing.

I would say why that is, but I don't want to start a fanboy war. Let's just say it has something to do with the lack of duriblity of a curtain game console with the number "60" in it's title.

PS3 is the best console for Netflix and it is the premier Blu-Ray player in my house.

I do not buy more than 1 game yearly for it.

The PS3 is not selling 120k per week because it's suddenly more popular. Its sales are actually in sharp decline YoY. It's just that the other consoles have declined faster. We all know the Wii's story, it declined like crazy very fast. X360 hasn't had a cut last year, as opposed to PS3, therefore the YoY difference. It's also been a year longer out, year and a half in Sony's biggest market.

All in all 120k is not that great by this gen's standards. Compared to the other two you may think it's a lot and that it's having a popularity surge, but it's declining, although slower due to having had a cut and being newer.

About the software, VGC is known to have undertracked PS3 SW, probably because much of it is sold in regions that are hard to track. Also, when there's no big releases, the SW sales are more spread across many different tiles that sell a few thousand units, so you won't necessarily see the results of those PS3 purchases in the top 10. As long as SW sales for the week remain larger than HW sales it's not that odd.

About the other two declining faster that doesn't explain the fact that with few big games the system is still doing fantastic, however maybe the 360 market is saturated. Your other points are more solid (games spread more widely). However that also applies to the 360. As for convincing reasons, I think the price reason mentioned by withdreday (and you mention the cut here) and the points mentioned by theshape are pretty convincing.

By a year longer out, do you mean that the PS3 is in a higher curve than the 360 in Europe right now due to a 1-year lag against its competitor?
