Forums - Sales Discussion - How long until PS3 overtakes the 360 in total sales?

MrMafoo said:
For the PS3 to pass the 360 any time soon, the 360 has to stop selling (and I think at some point it will).

When that happens is when the PS3 catches it. (well, shortly there after).

I would say late 2009.

So, in 2009 when the 360 software library consists of 500+ titles and the low-end 360 will very possibly cost $200-$250, the 360 will magically stop selling?

How does that work?

Microsoft will declare bankruptcy, and then the 360 will magically stop selling. ;P

My prediction (Jan 15th, 2008), total sales by end of 2008: Wii - 35 million X360 - 25 million PS3 - 21 million

Haha, fanboy wishful thinking. So far the PS3 has rather been an ugly baboon.

Eh what? calling some one out on this board as fanboy is kinda strange coming from you.

There's been alot of remarks made through you just acting in disbelief when the PS3 is selling over the 360. ("what the hell, I definitely believe the PS3 is overtracked!!!") - or something to that vain.

Keep the topic(s) free of this nonsense.

The same way the X-Box did. When you go to the store, look at your options, and walk away with something, you pick the best.

Just a guess, but here is what you might see in 2009…

  • 360 with 500+ games, PS3 with 500+ games.
  • The PS3 playing better looking games (possibly much better looking, if R&C/Uncharted are just the beginning)
  • The PS3  and the 360 costing the same
  • The PS3 with much better exclusive content (if the hype comes true about MGS, FF, GT)
  • PS3 being generally just a better piece of hardware
  • Playing HD movies on the PS3

Most everyone agrees the PS3 has two major failings. Poor gaming library, and cost. Once both of these are on par with the 360 (and as far as games, surpass it), why would you not buy a PS3?

If the above statement is all that matters with respect to sales, the x-box would have never stopped selling.

I really want to see how Sony will pull this off. The Wii erased the 360 lead by doing two thingsL having a lower price point and bringing nongamers to the table. The PS3 doesn't have either.

In order to beat the 360, Sony will have to lower its price to compete directly with the 360, or have games that are clearly superior than the 360. If not, the price will keep folks away. And folks talk about the PS2 owners will migrate naturally to the PS3. Why should they? Sony has told them they need to drop the last gen and roll with them. They removed BC because it was expendable, and then expect PS2 owners to sell their systems and just jump to the PS3. I would consider that a slip in the face. If you want me to buy your product, let me KEEP MY GAMES.

Folks are living in the past - remembering what an awesome - yet broken - system the PS2 was. The PS3 isn't the PS2, and you can bet your bottom dollar Sony will come out first next time and try to secure its past street cred.

Sony needs some serious dementia meds ...

Well, I also agree that eventually PS2 owners will migrate over to PS3. Of course not all of them, I would never expect something like that.

The reason for this is that just today, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks a co-worker was asking me what he could get if he sold and/or traded his PS2 and games to Gamestop or eBay. Of course I told him to go with eBay.

The reason he was asking was because he wanted to upgrade to a PS3. I also hit him with the Sony card offer for $100 back on PS3 purchase and he liked the sound of $300 PS3.

As for my opinion on the topic at hand, I would want to think sometime in mid-late 09. This year has guaranteed hits for sure with MGS4, LBP, KZ2, DMC4, GT5 among others. Great thing I think is that these are not spinoffs or sequels to anything else already released on this console (does Prologue count?). LBP is just an amazing concept, it is original and fresh, user created content makes it that much sweeter too. I would buy a PS3 just for this.

I am also very curious to see what HOME can do for the PS3. Not to mention whether or not the victory over HD-DVD will factor in at all.

So many questions at this point, although the outlook is positive.

If somehow (most likely) Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII get delayed to early 09', I still see Sony having a big 2008 from the other games being released this year.

You and I agree 100%. The difference is you don't think it will ever happen. I do.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Using the current trend, MS should be on track to move 8M Xbox360 in 08, which equates to an average of 153K/ week or around 120-135K average for a non christmas or holiday week.

  • For the PS3 to catch MS in 08 it would have to sell 296K average/week or around 250-260K average for a non christmas or holiday week.
  • For the PS3 to catch MS in 09 it would have to sell 225K average/week or around 190-200K average for a non christmas or holiday week.

Looking at this week MS will sell 132K units  which is on target, and sony will sell 145K units which is off an 08 or 09 target and only 13K

Let me put it this way for Sony to catch MS, we need to out sell MS every week.

to beat MS in 08 we need to outsell them weekly by 142K ( or 120-130K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 09 we need to outsell them weekly by 71K ( or 60-65K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 10 we need to outsell them weekly by 47K ( or 39-42K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 11 we need to outsell them weekly by 35K ( or 29-32K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 12 we need to outsell them weekly by 28K ( or 21-25K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 13 we need to outsell them weekly by 23K ( or 19-21K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 14 we need to outsell them weekly by 20K ( or 17-18K/ normal week)

to beat MS in 15 we need to outsell them weekly by 17K ( or 13-17K/ normal week)

The chance that Sony will surpass MS in sales in 2008 and 2009 seams remote/low. I will make my prediction for this take over after this weeks numbers are all released, but currently i would track it to around 2015.

Updated: With the current numbers I think that Sony catching MS is a Non issue. If they cant catch them before 2010, then they have lost this generation anyway. The PS3 and Xbox360 market share is not to relevant after 2010 as the manufactures will be looking at their next machine to take market share.

(BTW,my numbers are just rough and are approximate)

Well mister

I just proved you wrong my friend ps3 will clearly make more than 120k this week, and will outsell the Xbox 360 by more than 20k.

No it won't. After Jap numbers are in, the ww lead for the PS3 will be only 10K. And next week: 0 lead.

Yea but do you honestly think that will last?  Japan sales are still elevated with PS3 at 30-50k, PS3 will probably only sell 20k on a normal week in Japan.  This could be the last week for a while we see ps3 outsell 360.
