If graphics really mattered why do console game sales consistently beat PC game sales?
Inb4 piracy.
As far as i can see, Nintendo has taught itself valuable lessons in terms of controls (wiimotes and ipad/phone) and consumer expectations (priority of high definition screens, 3D in TV's, internet access, multimedia popularity), in order to offer the consumer a cheap innovative method to play games (and IF they want use other services, but in no way is this a priority for system resources).
If you genuinely believe that today, in our current economic climate, the cheaper console won't ultimately win out in the gen.8 race, you're seriously mistaken. Past generations clearly have taught you nothing.
As for that gaf thread, I agree with the sentiment that Nintendo still have 6 months to switch whatever graphics card they want in the machine and, as mentioned above, as long as this is a game machine first, and everything else second, it will easily be enough to keep consumers interested for a few years.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
Unless the game is built form the ground up on the WiiU it will never look better than a PS3/360 game. Why would devs bother when in their mind if its good enough for PS3/360 it is good enough for WiiU.
Even then look what happeend this GEN. many gamecube games looked better than the Wii games. No many really cared to do somwething with it.
This is where I think Nintendo failed. It was their E3, they should have showed first party games running at 1080p with gfx significantly better than PS3/360. It was Nintendo's bar to set as the benchmark.
Now all it has left is more questions. Is the WiiU actually better then PS3/360? maybe maybe not, but so far evidence points to no and devs will just use this as a way to keep porting without effort. Will 3rd parties support the system with games and not shovelware? or a Wii scenario all other again?

Console are convenient, you chuck the game in and expect it to work. PCs require bigger specs to run the games. people cannot afford the price to justfy it (PS3 was proof of that). If a PC was as cheap as a console, come with a controller (yes you can buy them seperate but regular people want convenience) and it was plug and play more (i know people who struggle to get controllers and install software) people would use PCs.

So you want companies to go bankrupt? Because if you're expecting current pc equivalent tech. in the Wii U, Nintendo will go bankrupt.
Watch Sony.

No I do not. I am explaining why more people prefer consoles. Mainly price and convenience. if the price of a Wii and PS3 where the same at launch PS3 would appeal to more people because of the better graphics and extra features it had compared to a Wii (apart form the motion controls).

Please. Stop trying graphics and resolution whores. PC gaming has got you beat by about 8 years.
pffffff i had to read through a lot of crap.....
1st anyone saying today console can run UE4, the SE engine, heck even cry engine 3..... IN REAL TIME in engine at full spec... has either no clue or need to tell me what he is smoking... cause i want some....
2nd people saying that the gap between todays graphic and tomorrows will shrink and slow down... has also no clue.... we are light years away to hit a tech stone wall.... graphic quality can be improve a 1000 fold.... heck even in cgi movies....
3rd photorealism tech capacity will be needed even for stylized games like mario just to give access to new gameplay and better integration....
now let me explain..... we've seen a pissing contest with screen shot.... but to me that is not where we should /can improve.... better graphic engine will allow to push things like physics, randominsation etc....
let develop... right now we have a bunch polygons stacked next to each other with some cool lighting effects a little particule effected and mediocre animation.... and it looks bad ass at full power on powerful PC.... but i wouldn't be impress if dev was telling me today.... "man a couple minor more push and this is it"
those poly are still empty, they do not transform well, and have very few properties.. now imagine one day i'll be able to maw done trees with a 50 caliber... see realistic branches and foiliage go done and get shred with particules everywhere... those branche would stay on the ground and dry the rest of the game if i ever come back that way.... the grass will turn yellow where hidden those particles of wood would create dust that stays on the ground... on a path way that when it rains becomes muddy have pudles forming and get my footprints and the tire threads of vehicle going through over time...
now i'm in a fantasy game and i play a mage and cast a fire spell hit a tree that tree catches on fire and if i don't do something it will turn into a california wild fire and leave only burnt trunks behind..... visite a cave then, where i grab a drape that moves like drape would if you pull it from a pile of crates.... and in the process puts tones of dust particule in susppension in the air....and ends up on all the furniture in that room you can tell because when i move the papers on the desk next to the crate you can clearly see a layer of dust surrounding the edge of where the papers were
now i'm out of mana and have to fight of that huge ogre... i go hand to hand on his ass... i can see his skin wable at each hit but he want flinch... so i run but he is mad he follows.... i can see sweat building up on his fat face and drool coming out of his mouth.... i reach some ruins where i find some stones i grab and throw at his face one hits him straight in the eye and a nice splash of blood comes out if it at the same time a scream of pain leave enough time to skip but i know i'll meet my one eye ogre friend again....
so yeah light years away from graphic exellence... when 3d object will be actually not empty have a density that is coherent with their material.... that each poly has properties that can change if there state chang.... physics movement, displacement, wear etc we are nowhere close to the far rwach.... you don't like photorealisme how about a mario where you can change the state of things use realisct physics in odd ways... have millions of different looking mean mushroom walking towards you from miles away through that weird looking jungle with thousands of firw ball spitting plants that you can use at your advantage to burn that passage clear to escape or bravely face them .... heck i can come with a world of idea nintendo hasn't even scratched in their wildest dream that will be only possible if we HUGELY improve graphic mediocrity we have today.....
and even a blind man could see the gap.... we are nowhere close to excellence from a hardware or engine/software standpoint....

I don't think anyone is arguing agaisnt that...
