Do you seriously think that SmartGlass would of been introduced if Nintendo didn't go second screen with the WiiU?

The reality is WIiU caused Microsoft and Sony to also add a second screen interface to their systems.

Yes, because Smart Glass has nothing to do with Wii U and everything to do with AirPlay. I don't even know why you'd even bring up the fact that Sony lets you use a Vita to play LBP2. Merely mentioning it expends more energy than Sony spent in the concept and implementation of such a lazy idea (although one that I'm sure all 10 Vita owners will enjoy).

Do you seriously think that the great innovator Nintendo would have given their console a tablet controller if the iPad weren't setting the world on fire?

The iPad did not release until 4/2010.

Nintendo was thinking about Wii U's tablet concept in 2008. Try again.

Apple was thinking about it in 2006. Why is this easily brushed away while Sony thinking about Move almost ten years ago is not valid! Sony the copiez, Nintendo the innovatez

Ok, I've heard a lot of bitching today. Sony copies what everyone is doing and improves it by a slight degree. They have been doing that for 15 years. There is absolutely no room for debate in that.

Now, Nintendo. Putting a tablet and APPLYING IT TO A VIDEOGAME console could be considered the innovation here; mainly because it has never been done before. But, before I confuse myself, lets define 'innovation'.

'Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of better and , as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.'

With that in mind, I guess Sony neither invented nor innovated. Maybe it is better to say Nintendo invented motion control with Wii, and invented tablet function in a console. Sony thought about Move and did not act on it for 10 years until Nintendo grew a pair of balls and risked it all first by having motion as the premier incentive for their console.

Sony's WonderBook says hello......LOL

Future of gaming innovation............

Sony can be serious some times.......

I'm actually going to submit that Microsoft had the boldest display of leadership at this E3. No joke. I don't like where they're headed, but they're increasingly willing to charge ahead into the direction they've chosen. I find that bold.

Nintendo isn't playing it safe at this point.

Too bad for them. They'd be better off playing it safe than playing it stupid.

And the Wii is nothing more than a stupid gimmick.  And so it goes on.  Nintendo releases info on a new console and people bash it.  Maybe they can go back to Gamecube days, and release more lunchbox type systems that don't really do anything new or different, just to placate people on forums who rant.

To OP :

I agree you point, however, in our world of gaming, I do think that what is more important than the innovation in gameplay, are games themselves.
Also, I'd like to point out that I (I think I can say we !) had high expectation with the Wii. But, I felt completely let down by Ninty in term of games these last years. Don't get me wrong, 2007/2008 was just awesome for wii owners, with the avalanche of very good games and sheer fun. But since that time, nothingness. And that made me a happy PC/PS3 gamer ^^

offtopic : About the Wii U pro controller, remember where the Xbox's ABXY pattern comes from guys ? Hint : SNES !

Being innovative is great but you have to ensure people will actually purchase the device and build a new market. It's not just about innovation but marketing and timing too. Sega innovated loads with a whole range of peripherals for the Mega Drive/Genesis but it didn't help them, if anything it was detrimental.

So far the WiiU is intriguing, but it doesn't have anything as exciting as Wii Sports to truly show it off.

You shouldn't compare the Wii U to the Wii. It isn't the next Wii. It's the Gamecube on stilts. And by stilts, I mean an iPad that you can't take out of the house.

Will, I will say that Smart Glass ends up showing one thing from Microsoft, and may mark a shift in their approach.  This being that they will push Live as a service and marry every other device to it.  Realizing they won't be able to bully with the platform, because Win Phone 7 is likely relegated to third place, they decide to allow iOS and Android to tie into their network.  This is a shift in a strategy, on that flies under the radar, and is likely significant for Microsoft.  Well, market reality is forcing them to do such.  If Win Phone 7 were stronger offering as far as marketshare, NO WAY would they be rolling out Smart Glass on iOS or Android.  They would try to bully with the OS.

The wiiU gamepad has a lot of potential , anyone who's not seeing it, probably too dumb to bother with.

The games matter to sustain a platform, and keep it viable.   However, as it is now, with most things multi-platform, about the only way to end up differentiating is to offer a unique experience with the console.  You need to have a differentiating hook.  The Wii did this, but at the cost of third-party because the experience was too different.  Wii U is set to try to address this by having third-party stuff, but by offering probably the best price-point approach to dual screens on the system.

And in regards to the controller, one had to figure that Nintendo would eventually get their own.  It is like every system has to have something like what the PS3 and 360 have.  Heck, I believe even OnLive has this.  I have a PC controller that is like it.  Issue is where the analog sticks are.
