If I remember correctly, the number four in Japanese (shi) is pronounced in the same manner as the word for death; therefore the number is considered a bad omen. There actually is a good chance the number will be skipped but the Playstation brand is likely still strong enough in Japan to weather the storm.

I honestly think they should try something new to try and distance themselves from their image problem in the west, though it is unlikely to succeed given that the image issue is attached to Sony themselves.

Unlucky or not they should stick with the numbered route, PlayStation 4! I think that's what people will expect, PS2, PS3, then PS4, it only makes sense. Naming the successor to the PSP, PlayStation Vita, was fine because, PSP2 was one digit too much, it just doesn't sound right. Although I have a feeling they will ditch the '4', here's hoping they keep up the tradition.
