Forums - General - China Is Hoarding Minerals Used for Smartphones and iPads, Obama Warns

yeah, right, because the Chinese care about environmental damage

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

It's their stuff, so they can do what they want. No?

No. I've pointed out in above posts that, as a member of WTO, they have certain obligations. This breaks one of those obligations, and so the USA, Japan, and Europe are taking this to the WTO to get something done about it. WTO is supposed to encourage as much free trade as possible between nations, this is a massive protectionist policy which the WTO has rules against. You can't get all the benefits of the WTO, while breaking the rules.

As some would say, you can't have the cake, and eat it.

off topic, but what does that even mean?

if i have a cake, i eat it!

China will be happy to sell its batteries to USA at a very high price. Then USA will better seriously recycle old batteries to recover rare earths from them, instead of "exporting" hi-tech wastes to third world.

Problem solved.

No need to recycle for the US, they have big amount of rare earth minerals, but do not mine them at the moment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Pass_rare_earth_mine

I imagined that in such a large country there shouldn't be shortages of any element, then it's just matter that they prefer to deplete Chinese reserves, and at low extraction costs too, without having to respect either the environment or the workers. And the Hypocrisy Award goes again to the Promised Land of Bigots!

Wow people on this site really do have no clue what being a member of the WTO means.

Fact: WTO just wanted China to join it at all costs, China knows it and it will extort any possible benefit and indulgence in return. China gets away with invasions, nuclear proliferation, selling weapons to rogue states, imprisonments of dissidents, violation of human rights and mass killing, they can deal with trifle like this.
