A better question to all the people who bitched and whined and complained, and linked quotes which they don't quite comprehend, is why they suddenly NOW started to care? He is in hiding. Resources have been put into finding him. Where was all this... passion, back when child abductions were far far more common? Hence, a bunch of ignorant people who all of the sudden, in the best case, try to make up for their ignorance far too little far too late.

Jeez dude, some of us just didn't know! The internet has grown and helped people be aware of problems all over the world. Maybe, just maybe people would care earlier if they had known earlier?

But you didn't didyou? You were too damn ignorant when it really mattered. Who knows how many issues that are horrendous that are happening right now out in the world that you don't know exist. Will you go and educate yourself about them and not be one of the "ingnorant fucks" I mentioned about earlier? I doubt it.

Sorry for the double post (see above) but I think he IS saying that he (and you and I) ARE ignorant.  I guarantee that right now if you did some research online you could find someone as bad as Kony who just doesn't have as much attention right now.  You could be the start of a new campaign, and so could everyone else out there right now.  But...that would take a lot of effort and REAL work, whereas just posting "oh man stop kony" takes almost no effort yet everyone is congratualting themselves on a job well done.

 

And just to reiterate, I do think the motives of this whole campaign are good, its just interesting to see so many people pat themselves on the back for doing almost nothing.

..but this "movement" is a bunch of people on FB and twitter going "omg stop kony" and then reposting the video. Most of these people aren't going to actually donate money, or petition their congressman, or join the army to stop him.

This is the equivalent of me opening my front door, screaming "I THINK AIDS IS A TERRIBLE DISEASE AND NEEDS TO BE ERADICATED", and then going back to doing absolutely nothing about it. Just because you SAY your against something doesn't mean anything.

For the people out there who actually ARE doing something (and not just "raising awareness") then great, you truly are a good person in this regard. But for everyone else (read: the majority) this is just them patting themselves on the back and feeling good for "taking a stand".



PS there is also the whole issue of America not needing to be the world police, recovering from a recession, and Africa's state of afairs, but I know fuck all about that so I'm not going to comment

I especially agree with PS. I also agree with the rest, but you must concede, there is a start for everything. Of course it's easy to look at it and say, in general, these are people just trying to feel good about themselves. But what about those of us this spurs to action? Already writing in this thread is my baby step. I would also like to do the April 20th. Of course I can't afford to fly to Africa just yet, but I can step out and stamp posters in my city.

Well then good, if your baby steps bring you towards real action then you are one of the people I was talking about in the bolded.  Truly it is a good thing.  Its just the other 99% who are going "Job well done me!" when all they did was hit the "share" button that I find kind of....I guess hypocritical would be the word.  If anyone else thinks of a better word let me know ha.

I was surprised to learn of this movement. I knew about this for a long time(didn't know the leaders name but knew of the travesties regardless) so it came as a shock to me that this movement started considering, well, its been happening for a long time now-_-. Give it a few days maybe weeks. No one will remember or care sadly, but what can you do? People want to feel like they are doing something good even when they aren't really doing anything at all.

The anger that a good movement causes to some people is laughable. Many people now know about Kony and are expressing their dislike for him, and it just drives some people crazy. I'm glad the world actually is spreading this vs being a negative Nancy and trying to degrade people for having a heart.

If you even posted this on facebook you already helped because you spread the word. So you are one of the people actually doing something so any negativity your way doesn't amount to jack.

i have never previously heard anything about Joseph Kony.
I believe it is just another online scam set up to fleece bleeding hearts who care about the african children.
anyway it is hard to believe that one man could be responsible for so many alleged crimes against him.
the assumption of guilt without any evidence/proof being presented. kony the defendant has not even made a statement on the accusations against him.
i would not recommend anyone to donate to a fake movement.
AFAIK the money donated could be going into scammers bank accounts

Because he isn't #1 on "America's" (it's actually the FBI's) Most wanted list. Semion Mogilevich is. Kony was the first person to be indicted by the ICC.

I think it's an interesting and noble social experiment.

Maybe it doesn't amount to anything, but that's easy for the pessimist to say. What if it does?

So what if the average person doesn't do anything directly, awareness in itself is power. Politicians and people in power do not care about issues that their constituents don't care about. If this builds awareness then it becomes a bigger issue as a whole, and I don't see how that in any way does anything but help.

If there was more vocal public outrage and knowledge about what was happening in the German death camps in WW2, perhaps the allies would've made it a higher priority to bomb the rail lines to those camps that took so many people to their deaths. Today we have a tool that wasn't existant back then and that's the internet, which connects to us to things happening everywhere around the world in real-time. This is a big difference.


And really so what if you spared 30 minutes to watch that video. You likely would've been jerking off or watching some stupid Youtube videos or Facebook time-wasting ... at least now you're at the very least aware of something else that's happening somewhere else.

Why should the US government care what happens in an impoverished African nation over run by corruption, poverty, crime and run by armed militia. African and Middle Eastern nations have had a bloody past of civil war and they are often ruled by tyrants or dictators.
