I understand that this "KONY" is a bad guy, but posting "STOP KONY 2012" on a Youtube comments section or through Facebook isn't going to change anything.

i also watched the video. Although I can understand what the guy is trying to do about bring awareness to what Kony is doing over in Africa, but it's not too affective. I was watching a totally different video on Youtube and some random poster in the comments section typed "KONY 2012". I was thinking... what about it? What is typing that going to do?

Eh, I have to say I agree with Vlad and Leatherhat on this one. Don't get me wrong, I think this whole child soldier thing is terrible and (obviously) shouldn't be happening...

..but this "movement" is a bunch of people on FB and twitter going "omg stop kony" and then reposting the video. Most of these people aren't going to actually donate money, or petition their congressman, or join the army to stop him.

This is the equivalent of me opening my front door, screaming "I THINK AIDS IS A TERRIBLE DISEASE AND NEEDS TO BE ERADICATED", and then going back to doing absolutely nothing about it. Just because you SAY your against something doesn't mean anything.

For the people out there who actually ARE doing something (and not just "raising awareness") then great, you truly are a good person in this regard. But for everyone else (read: the majority) this is just them patting themselves on the back and feeling good for "taking a stand".



PS there is also the whole issue of America not needing to be the world police, recovering from a recession, and Africa's state of afairs, but I know fuck all about that so I'm not going to comment

I especially agree with PS. I also agree with the rest, but you must concede, there is a start for everything. Of course it's easy to look at it and say, in general, these are people just trying to feel good about themselves. But what about those of us this spurs to action? Already writing in this thread is my baby step. I would also like to do the April 20th. Of course I can't afford to fly to Africa just yet, but I can step out and stamp posters in my city.

The resolution to Vlad's tangent is that yes, a good portion of the people who will embrace these flavor-of-the-month activist movements will just be posers, but every little is a help. If 100,000 kids buy a $3 charity bracelet for no reason other than to be hipsters, that's $300,000, and then one must consider that you'll reach people who are (or will become) truly passionate about the cause as you sift through the posers.

It's sturgeon's law applied to activism. 90% of people who claim "support" won't really support it, but the 10% you do get are going to be a great help to the cause.

Theres ALWAYS two sides to every story. This viral film has caught the attention of heaps of young folk but you are all far too late. Watching that Kony video is essentially watching old news. They started filming in 2003, and northern Uganda has been free of LRA violence and war for over five years. In fact, the LRA have signed a peace accord! They are rebuilding and are restoring the peace.
Yes the leader is still out there however the recruitment of children has decreased 80%. This isn't due to the Invisible Children organisation, its because Ugandan military and the ICC have intercepted. The Invisible Children group are trying to pass a bill that allows America to militarise the region... They are providing misinformation to woo idealistic followers. The group have combined multiple regional conflicts to make it appear that this is one rapidly increasing issue. When confronted about their dodgy tactics, the head spokesperson stated;
“I agree with you that leading people to believe that the war is still happening in Uganda is not ethically right. It's something we've been addressing internally, focusing on getting all staff and supporters on the same page (of communication)."
If you read the news, or even had an ounce of interest in the on-going unrest in Africa you would already know this and not be fooled. Yes, awful things happen to people in 3rd world countries but this has been occurring for centuries, it isn't a recent occurrence.

Charity Navigator is a website that breaks down the proceeds and donations given to Invisible Children and subsequently shows what percentile of that is REALLY going towards these impoverished kids.
