Why didn't Mario Kart sell 30 Million on the DS, Gamecube, N64, SNES, etc? Mario Kart Wii has been bundled for a very long time now. Along with Wii Sports Resort? Why didn't Smash Bros. ever sell as well as it has on Wii? Why is Just Dance the only game that's been pushing the Wii over the last 2 Holiday seasons? Wii Fit and Wii Sports sold more Wii's than Mario ever did. The Wii certainly reached 90 Million because of 3rd parties. Not just Nintendo. Doesn't matter if you don't want to believe it. Without Just Dance the Wii would have been trounced over the last 2 Holiday seasons and would have been dead in the dust in 2011, Just Dance 2 kept it afloat throughout the Year and JD3 kept it competing in November/December. Without the countless party games released from 3rd parties, consumers would have got bored of the Wii long ago. Without the Wii Fit ripoffs, consumers would have got bored. Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Kirby, Zelda, Metroid... None of them helped the N64 or GC compete against the 3rd party driven PS or PS2. There's a reason for that. There's a reason why Call of Duty, the biggest videogame franchise in the World, sells 20 Million copies a Year. There's a reason why FIFA sells 10 Million copies a Year. There's a reason why NIntendo are begging 3rd parties to jump on with Wii U and 3DS... 3rd parties are also the reason why the PS3 and 360 have grown Yearly since release and why the Wii is seeing record Yearly drops. |
Rol asked me a very important question once. What if, rather than releasing games like Skyward Sword, to my displeasure, but to their benefit, Nintendo decided to release a NSMBWii 2, or a DKCR 2, or more of the content that made the Wii a smashing success? More experiences like Wii-sports, full caliber. For example, a Wii sports boxing, pure boxing, fully featured. Not a mini-game? Fully advertised, top quality.
Possibly this might be a weak strategy, but we know that one of the main reasons the Wii plummetted in SW sales performance is because Nintendo didn't continue to support its console with 1st party titles, instead they chose to create AAA content like Skyward Sword and build up the potential for the next gen. Did they make the right decision or not, that's a question for another thread. But one thing is certain, you can't simply attribute Nintendo reaching 90M+ HW sales simply to 3rd parties, when Nintendo wasn't even in the game with its own evergreen SW to be considered a factor! Understand, you may not be right.

Why not use MK that sold 30+M and say 60m Wii owners don’t care about Mario? |
You know your 100% full of it right? If your assumption is correct then what happened to the N64 and Gamecube? Obviously they were missing the 3rd parties then.
I also didn't mention Mario Kart because I didn't need to. My point was that those games alone did not sell all 94M consoles. You really think that 30M bought MKWii and a seperate 25M bought New Super Mario Bros. Wii? I bet there is a large amount of overlapping in those sales, not to mention one of the two is still bundled, just like it has for over a year now. Or does it now come bundled with NSMBWii?
Now, Nintendo makes a music game and it does decent because of the "Wii" in the title, but I don't see it having a future. Yes, I am talking about Wii Music.
Now look at those useless 3rd parties and games like Just Dance which has fueled the Wii for how many holiday seasons? Want to bet that Zumba Fitness and Just Dance 3 made more of a dent this holiday than Zelda? I bet you don't.
Anyways, if you want to go with this generation, yes, you can make the argument that Nintendo didn't really need the 3rd party devs, but don't go acting as if that is always the case, because history proves that to not be true and there is no guarantee that next gen will treat Nintendo so kindly without 3rd party support. For all you know their own titles might not be enough and without 3rd party support the Wii U might suffers a simliar fate to the N64 or GCN.
Just do yourself a favor and stop acting like 3rd parties means nothing because if you haven't noticed it is thanks to 3rd parties than Wii is dying and PS360 are thriving.
With some good 3rd party support we might not be talking about Wii U just yet.
3rd parties is also why Wii will probably never catch PS2, even though it was posting record shattering numbers early on.
Believe it or not, Nintendo can only do so much on their own. They do need 3rd parties. I know, others know it and going by Nintendo's own line of thought lately, they too know that they need them.

I never understand how Sony manages to keep shedding all their major exclusives in the first place.
GTA, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear...those are definite system sellers! Especially GTA IV...that game alone would have helped the PS3 to compete comparably to the Xbox360 in the US. I mean San Andreas sold close to 10mil just on the PS2 in the US right? Wtf were Sony thinking letting the next one slip through?!
I get that Microsoft probably threw buckets of money at Rockstar, S.Enix, etc. to get those games on their system, but Sony has deep pockets too and they should have secured those games much earlier on. They really shot themselves in the foot there.
It's hard to compete when your once exclusive blockbuster games are now available on other systems, AND you're saddled with an initially negative response to your new console and it's price tag, AND sure-fire rival products like Mario, Halo, etc. It still surprises me that they did as well they have done this generation.
And now Monster Hunter 4 on 3DS. When they were developing the Vita didn't Sony think they might need that game for their handheld to sell well in Japan?!
Ugh!

I don't think anybody's saying that Nintendo has nothing to do with the Wii's sucess. But saying that 3rd parties didn't help it get to where it is today is just foolish.
Over the past couple of years, Ubisoft has sold 25 million Just Dance games on the Wii. 22 million Sonic games, of various genres, have been sold thanks to Sega's support. 15 Million Lego Star Wars games thanks to Travellers' Tales. 13 million Gutiar Hero games from Activision.
I understand thanking that Nintendo is the #1 ingredient to their own sucess, but don't you think these 3rd parties help over the years?
All he said was that there will be a smaller gap between the European launches of Vita and MH, than between the Japanese launches of each.
If MH releases for Vita in Europe in 2015, and in 2078 in Japan, his statement will be accurate. Really, what it realistically means, is that there will not be much time between the Japanese release of the game and the European one.

The PS3 was hard to develop for, lacked RAM, and was a year late entry post 360 dev kits already in devs hands. Add to that an abysmal launch due to a hefty price tag, and you have your answer.

You totally quoted me out of context... But I wasn't being clear maybe. I'll try again.
I was trying to explain that he can't argue the following:
"Nintendo couldn't have achieved 90M+ on their own without the 3rd party Just Dance periods of 2010 and 2011"
Reason he can't argue that: Nintendo wasn't in the game (making evergreen casual-oriented Wii titles) to begin with as of 2010 , to the upsetting of some Nintendo fans.
I would argue that it's impressive that 3rd parties managed to achieve it on their own, but I believe Nintendo could've achived 130M+ had they continued to support the console, with the help of 3rd parties giving background content. Try to see what I mean.
And maybe even, they could have reached 90M+ without 3rd parties, had they kept the momentum going. No proof, just hypothesis with predictions given the 2008 to 2009 track record.
