The Wii is a success even more then a success, it took Nintendo from an unfavourable position and placed them in a commanding one over their competitors, it'll be the top seller for this gen as at the rate PS3 and 360 are selling it would take around 6 years to over take the Wii and neither of them will be around on the market for that long tbh.

As for library who here thought the Wii would end up with the library it did this gen, when I bought it at launch I was expecting to solely use it for first party games (which this gen imo has been their best first party performance), the fact that games like MH3, TVC, Goldeneye, Madworld and such started popping up was more then a pleasant surprise as these were games that I doubt anyone expected on the platform.

The sad thing is there are some people who thought that it wouldnt, but im happy to see some Ninty fans were not living in Dreamland. Look at the damn specs for Wii. Its just a bit more powerful than GC. Look at the HDs, way more powerful. People also forget, that the 360 was already out a whole year before Wii and alot of game were being developed for it already. What were third parties supposed to do?? Throw all that out the window and start from scratch for Wii?? Even if one made the argument that WIi was capable of better looking games, it would still pale in comparison to the competition and people would just buy HD versions of those games anyway, like they have been doing all gen long.  Not only did Ninty not really try to get 3rd party support, they made a system that was incompatible with what everyone else was doing for the most part, luckily they have learned and are rectifying, hench Wii U & 3DS

OT, yes it was a success and yes it did bring people to play certain games that they would not have played before.

OT

what kind of question is this ?

Of course it´s a success. 90+ million consoles sold and a lot of new consumers to the videogames market thanks to easy acessibility and motion controls. Wii finally convinced family members that the living room is the right place for a game console.

It may not catered core gamers, but it definetely bring a lot of fresh ideas for the market and consumers recognize that by buying it incessantly.

Wii's biggest success was in revolutionizing the industry. It brought games to the masses - women, older folks and casual players. Without Wii there would have been no Kinect or Move. There would be no fitness or dance titles which are now popular on all systems. And these days 360 and PS3 sales are bouyed in part by that very market that Wii created.

Otherwise Wii was a success on all levels, massive sales, massive profits, great library of titles - granted, mostly 1st party. However, Wii is aging poorly and has horrid support in it's final years, nor did it ever live up to the expectations placed on it. But success came early to the Wii and if not for limited supply from 2006-2009 it's sales would probably have eclipsed 100m already.

Rol, you said something very interesting in one of your previous posts. You said that even Nintendo themselves grew to hate the Wii. So then, why Wii U? Won't that name turn off many gamers?

Great posts from all you Nintendo fans.

The Wii is Nintendos' best selling home console of all time.

Thank fuck Seece has left this thread, with his Nintendo hating ways.

Wii U Nintendo Network ID, Borode

XBOX Live ID, Borode

This doesn't even need an answer!

Alright, I'll state the obvious, it's a huge failure.

Ah, a Nintendo thread. OP, you asked a few questions, allow me to answer:

Simple question: Is the Wii a success?

Yes and No.

Take into account the totality of things. Did it succeed financially?

Yes.

Commercially?

Yes and No. The reason is there was much potential room for them to succeed even more, so relative to their potential and easy to achieve success? No. Relative to their previous market position? a big yes.

It begs the question, what could Nintendo have done different? 2 things, one which you came up with first so credit goes to you. 1) They could have surfed the momentum of the NSMB/DKCR craze with updates to those series, as did Sony with most of their IPs this gen (infamous goes to 3, so does Uncharted, and others). 2) They could have better designed their console (given a wiser vision) to allow for HD graphics. At a small cost, but it didn't need to be cutting edge, only may even just under 360 (a console 2 years older than the Wii) would have been enough.

Did it live up to Nintendo's expectations?

Yes and No. Their vision was to capture a large audience, but that audience wasn't totally captured, as you seem to advocate. Success on the other hand that their strategy to market to the blue ocean succeeded powerfully.

DId it provide the type of games that justified its existence?

No. Third parties did not give their top effort to the Wii due to snobbing and the "need" for top graphics.

Is the Wii the underdog console that overcame all odds to become a hit or is the Wii the Tim Tebow of the console world who owns all its (questionable) success to dumb luck and/or divine intervention?

It is the underdog console that overcame ALL odds to become a hit. A return to the cube days will help you remember. Though Nintendo was in the green of profitability, in terms of marketshare it was abysmal... One could claim their survival a divine intervention, however not without some very positively risky and sound decisions.

Consider the Wii's competition. Consider the Wii's legacy. Consider the Wii's obstacles. Consider the Wii's contributions. Consider all of this and tell me if Nintendo and the gaming world are better off with the Wii on the market.

YES. The Wii revolutionized gaming. Not everyone wants to play Call of Duty. When families got together to play Wii Sports, and New Super Mario Bros., it was a revolution. Games have also followed the trend of entertainment within the industry as a whole, including Nintendo, to make electronics more approachable and ergonomic. The iPad and DS are other such example this generation.

Yes, that looks familiar. It was decided that I should make this thread for the Wii, so I did.

Yes, and you did very well.

People who use doublespaces after each sentence should burn in hell, because what they do only leads to other people having more work to do.

;)

For my dear mystery game lovers:

Rodrigues looked at the VHS label, it had a red text with the movie's filmographic information written with ink. Regardless of that, it was clear that (despite him being 14) the movie was rated 'R', even if not officially (at least that's how he understood it, the ink almost looked like blood). Reluctantly, he placed the casette in the VHS player and sat nervously in his recliner, a Rickards in hand, unsure what he would find in this mysterious tape he found under that park bench. Rather a matter of luck, his parents weren't home that day.

The answer lies in the messages you have witnessed. Visit me with your key to unlock the gate of gold. Within you will find what lies at the end of the road.

I can see how there's an argument whether both 360 and PS3 are successes...but there really isn't an argument for the Wii, it was successful. It made money, leads the market, and is Nintendo's best selling console ever.

A fantastc console with some of the best games ever see. I perfectly remember how I felt playing for the first time Wii sport: something between joy and the surprise for a so brilliant concept.
