Forums - Microsoft - Is it OK to feel Halo 1 is the best shooter this gen???

Goldeneye was both popular and a rare great FPS on console but due to timing and the console it was on it would never have had the impact of a Half Life in general or Halo on console.

Halo with MP and the emerging Live network paved the way for the huge growth in FPS/online (love it or hate it) on console instead of PC and set the path for 360/PS3 and where we are today.

Goldeneye by comparison was a bright gem that would have (IMHO) led to nothing much further regarding FPS/console titles, Nintento certainly were not (and only with Wii U may be) on a path that would have allowed Goldeneye to have a big legacy.  That's why Halo (rightly I'd argue) get's the accolades for popularizing the genre and in particular online on console and not Goldeneye.

On PC of course FPS, etc. was already well defined ahead of Goldeneye and only until relatively recently with the launch of 360 and the huge switch of consumer preference in US/UK in particular to console rather than PC for FPS/online has the legacy started primarily with Halo arrived.

It was a great game thought, influenual on others for sure, and popular with sales of over 8 million - but on a Nintendo platform it was always going to be an outlier for FPS/online than anything else - IMHO of course :)

So now the question is whether the FPS genre grew much by virtue of moving to consoles.  I would argue that this is the case, although I could be wrong.  If I am right, then that is how Halo brought gaming to the masses.

I would agree it brought it to the masses.

I would also argue that another certain game COD has although continued the maintreaming, made FPS genre turn into a respawning, QTE, linear mess. Also in many ways killing the actual skill of multiplayer online with levels and perks.Instead of being about who is te bst, its who as the best guns or perks.

Halo showed us a FPS with open environmens, tactical AI and seamless vehicle integration on consoles. COD closed all those things down.

One company paved a good way. Another closed that path down.

Unfotunately many FPS games follo the COD formula due to its casual sales. And as a result the FPS scene in general is weak on the gameplay front IMO.

Well, IF that was the case you could argue that :)

I personally think that total FPS audience has only grown in line with general gaming growth.  I think the explosion on consoles is more about transference of PC gamers to consoles than consoles pushing FPS - if you see what I mean.

Anyway, to use internet speak - "Half Life is best.  Fact!"

Last gen, possibly.

This gen, no.

It belongs to Call of Duty 4 this generation.

Last gen, yes.

This gen, yes.

Without Halo, there would be no CoD4 because Xbox 1 would have crashed and burned.

You do know CoD launched before Xbox on PC and was already a successful FPS franchise?  Without Halo/Cod the only difference would have been CoD4 would have released on PC/PS3 only and in US/UK a lot of young male adults would have just had to save up for PCs.

it did/was ?

CoD, especially CoD2 was amazing.
CoD3 ..not so much.
CoD4 is when it became the go-to game for FPS (speaking sales!)

You are entitled to an opinion.

Im sure your not alone in that opinion. This makes me happy :)

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Can't say since I have never played Halo CE, but I sure did enjoy the hell out of Halo 3.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

I kniow all of that, I have played every call of duty until the latest one...

I was disputing the fact that COD was an established franchise prior to Halo.  I thought Halo and COD started the same year.

EDIT: just saw what I think's causing the confusion.  When I wrote before Xbox I meant that CoD was big on PC before it grew on Xbox, not that it launched miles before Xbox.  So far as I know CoD hit just around or even just after Halo.

I was therefore pointing out that if Xbox had failed it wouldn't necessarily have prevented CoD4 or CoD at all surviving.  The franchise would no doubt have continued to grow on PC with Xbox or PS3 - because let's face it if Xbox had crashed and burned then titles like CoD would be on PC/PS3 they wouldn't just have vanished.

So my point was it's not a case of Halo leading to CoD and FPS domination on console so much as Halo being one of a number of successful FPS franchises that covered multiple platforms across PS2, Xbox, PC, etc.

I really like Halo but find too many people think it influenced everything else rather than understanding it was one of a number of franchises that in different ways defined the genre (Half Life and Counter Strike for example being another such franchise) although I do see Halo as having the most initial influence on how to design FPS for console/gamepad control.
