I don't think MS really cares if PS3 surpasses the 360. Who even expected the 360 to surpass PS3 for all these years? MS is in a good position, their profits are great and sales are strong. Their 4GB console is still cheaper than a PS3 and they just bundled two triple A games with their Elite console. So they are still competitive.

Sony said they are more concerned about PS3 profiting than surpassing the 360, but their recent price cut says otherwise nor has it had a significant impact on sales.

I put it at a 10% chance in my Sony article - just went live. Take a look at previous holiday quarter figures:

               Q4 2007     Q4 2008     Q4 2009    Q4 2010     Q4 2011 Est

X360         4.3m           6.0m            5.2m          6.3m            5.5m?    (Q3 2011 was down significantly)

PS3            4.9m            4.5m          6.5m           6.3m           6.7m?    (Q3 2011 was slightly up)

If that was the difference you'd have a gap of under 1m which would be made up by June 2012, possibly by March 2012

Were the difference to be made up by year end you'd need something like 7m / 5m in favor of PS3 - I can't really see X360 shipments under 5m or PS3 over 7m in the Dec quarter given how the US / Europe split over Christmas.

Q3 calendar, Q2 sony financial year.  My point was it did have a significant impact on sales.

i dont think it will do it, possibly next year. 360 could have price cut but as last gen there is only so low you can go. you cant just keep haking of £50 every year

i can recall a microsoft rep stating regarding xbox 1 that they could not cut any more, i suppose  sony and ninty will be in same boat. why isnt ps2 29.99 new?
