but their recent price cut says otherwise nor has it had a significant impact on sales.

They just had their best Q2 ever while ever other piece of hardware (besides the psp for some reason) is down YoY.

Didn't the PS3 price cut happen in Q3?

Q3 calendar, Q2 sony financial year.  My point was it did have a significant impact on sales.

Whats was the sales difference YoY for PS3? I'm sure it had an impact, just doesn't seem to be a game changer.

Also, the 360 Slim launched last year in September. Perhaps that has something to do with 360 being down YoY?

If MS doesn't cut the price, I think they can swing it. If they do cut the price (which they probably will after these results), then I think they can.

it's pretty funny if MS don't do anything

I don't think MS really cares if PS3 surpasses the 360. Who even expected the 360 to surpass PS3 for all these years? MS is in a good position, their profits are great and sales are strong. Their 4GB console is still cheaper than a PS3 and they just bundled two triple A games with their Elite console. So they are still competitive.

Sony said they are more concerned about PS3 profiting than surpassing the 360, but their recent price cut says otherwise nor has it had a significant impact on sales.

Don Mattrick would disagree.

It's up about 6% YOY.  I'm not sure how much more you expected.  If it had shipped 4 million that would be the second best calendar Q3 for the entire console generation.  Behind only the Wii in 2008.  As it stands, it is the third best console Q3 of this generation.  The 360 slim launched in the previous quarter, but it certainly affected sales in Q3 last year.

They were bragging at E3 this year that they'd be the number one console worldwide.

I reckon it wont happen till March 2012, i think kinect will have another good showing this year in the US especially on black friday week,

I believe it will happen by June next year, the gap is a little too big right now, but by that point next year, most people will be focusing on the Wii-U and the next Sony and Microsoft console

I doubt they can pass the 360 by the end of the year, but they'll probably close the gap a bit more.  They need to sell at least 7 million next quarter if they want to realistically hit 15 million for the fiscal year.  (that's assuming nothing major changes in terms of price/bundles/etc.)

No, Sony just posted their results from the 2nd quarter, they have still 2 more quarters to sell. Their fiscal year is not the calendar year...

Off course they could always ship more.

But i don't think they will, because they won't outsell the 360 enough, so, nope, not this year.

No, but by June 30th for sure. Just around the time the next gen is announced.

Don't know why but i still get the feeling they will be announced at TGS, or at least sony's will anyway

PS3 got big shipment bump because of price cut. Wont have the same bump this qtr. Actually expect PS3 shipments to drop slightly compared to last year. Dont expect the sales in Europe and Japan because of GT5 release last year this Qtr. Expect 360 shipments this Qtr to be similiar to last year because MS ran out of units last year early/mid December.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Wait so is that Turkish guy claiming that there are TWO quarters left BEFORE 31st december 2011? I am not sure if serious.

Probably will overtake it next year, when it won't matter anymore.

Lol if MS doesn't cut the price this year. Would that mean they don't give a rat's ass about the race anymore?
