Professor Layton Leaves The Nintendo Stable, Adds iOS To Supported Platforms

One of the biggest Nintendo DS franchises is coming to iOS. Level-5 has announced that Nintendo’s exclusive access to their Professor Layton franchise is ending, and they’ll be releasing a new game called Layton Brothers: Mystery Room for iOS devices.

A developer making the jump from DS to iOS isn’t the biggest news in the world, but Layton is one of the DS’s most successful series, critically and commercially. The three games in the series so far (not counting Professor Layton and the Last Specter, released today in the US) have sold over eleven million copies, and reviewers have embraced the game’s mix of quirky characters and taxing puzzles.

Having played some of the games (the second and third), I can say that they seem a perfectly good match for iOS, and the new one, featuring “crime-scene mystery style gameplay starring the intuitive son of Hershel Layton” likely won’t depart too far from them.

But Nintendo must be fuming. It’s possible they locked in Level-5 to a certain number of titles before anything from the franchise appeared elsewhere, but clearly now they no longer have that hold, if they ever did. The company has always prided itself on taking its own road and more or less ignoring competitors, a strategy that has led to some big wins and catastrophic losses. This independence from trends occasionally gets infected with complacency, and in this case, with the 3DS lagging in sales, they may end up with the iPhone eating their lunch.

No release date has been announced, nor any further information.

By the way Phoenix Wright is also on IOS phones, thats the version i have actually.

If anything, this will just add more fuel to iOS, and hurt the DS/3DS.

Not surprising.

After all, the iPhone 4S sold more units in 3 days than the 3DS did in 6 Months.

It is not a Professor Layton-game, it is a spin-off that used to be something else before they slapped the Layton-name on it

Cause I'm was like the only member who ever posted threads about iOS a few years back.. and saw the hate it got.. with members laughing at the idea of games on the smartphone.. claiming it will never take off without buttons.. that no "real" franchise would come.. only simple stupid games would come out.. that I would forever play with 1 to 5 buck games.. there was a time that none of us had a smartphone..

Ya, Layton Brothers isn't a professor layton game. Before that it was just simply Mystery Room.

I don't see this as a threat to Nintendo much. Honestly Level 5 won't make nearly as much money selling this iOS game what will they sell it at 5$ or less? The retail version of their software on DS generates much higher profits for both Level 5 and Nintendo.

In cases where Level five actually publishes their game they should make about 45% of the total 39.99$. In cases where they don't actually publish they should be bringing in around 15% which is still above what they'd make on iOS. They should be making at least about 6$ on every game they sell on Nintendo's platforms. On iOS I have heard Apple takes about 30% of the profits a game makes. So a 5$ game on iOS won't make the developer even 5$.

Now if Level 5 can bring in say 50% more consumers and increase sales by that much while maintaining a 5$ price tag or higher then maybe they can actually make money.

In the end I thin yah the title is going to be successful on iOS. But if it doesn't turn the profits it has on DS they will continue to make Nintendo titles. In the long term this is a bad thing for Nintendo but if the sales don't accumulate on iOS and their isn't as much profit to be made expect Level 5 to return to Nintendo with future software.

It's not a real Layton game, just a simple and stupid game with the name tacked on. Now go and cry a river.

You're right.. it's like a Luigi game...
