I think layton and Phoenix is a game base on touch screen. So I don't think anything wrong here.

I like how they went to the trouble to mock up that image before bothering to check what the game actually is...

Cause I'm was like the only member who ever posted threads about iOS a few years back.. and saw the hate it got.. with members laughing at the idea of games on the smartphone.. claiming it will never take off without buttons.. that no "real" franchise would come.. only simple stupid games would come out.. that I would forever play with 1 to 5 buck games.. there was a time that none of us had a smartphone.. |
...but mostly because they like whining
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

And on the other hand I remember members saying that dedicated handhelds would be wiped out very quickly by smartphones, which still doesn't look like happening either.

Weren't you the guy who wants an iphone cause he was going into mobile gaming business? Epic games stated they earned 20 million dollars with 5 million paid downloads with Infinity Blade.. but 4 months earlier they earned 11 million.. that's 9 million in 4 months.. and "Since we launched IAP (in app purchases.. dlc) in Infinity Blade, it accounts for about 45 percent of our revenue," So Epic is making a buckload of money for a 2 million dollar game cause in the long run they can keep the game fresh, in the spotlight, in a cheap way.. |
Yes you are correct, and yah my view might be a little dated if your following trends. You give two examples of iOS games that are doing very well. In fact Angry Birds is the most successful iOS game ever made and Infinity Blade is also up there, sure Professor Layton could potentially sell that many copies. But don't use those games as the standard since many iOS games actually make 5$ or less a day.
Also you mention the 400 million downloads, however that is not just iOS that is across all platforms including consoles, social networks etc....etc... Also of those how many are paid downloads? According to stats on Wikipedia Angry Birds has only sold 12-million paid copies on Apples App store. At 99cents each that is pretty good for a low budget game. However it is not in comparison to Professor Layton's DS success. At nearly 5-million copies sold "The curious Village" will have generated more profit on the DS then Angry Birds did directly on iOS.
A lot of the money that comes into Angry Birds and such is the ad revenue as you mention. The product placement etc....etc... Then you are also mentioning stats you say 30-million in December 2010 however stats say "Rovio Mobile announced that the game had been downloaded 50 million times, with more than 12 million on iOS devices" Then it goes on to mention "10 million on Android." That leaves over half of the paid versions of Angry Birds on other platforms (PC/Game consoles). Assuming they were talking paid copies since we all know the total number of downloads exceeds 400-million.
That is very good but compare that to console games that are very successful. Also Infinity Blade didn't it start off at 9.99$? If they sell substantial amounts of software it is easy to see how it could be one of their most successful titles. But these are two of the biggest games on iOS not an indication of how good the market is for other titles.
In the end iOS is a great market for indie studios and low budget content. But when it comes to releasing bigger budget content and wider recognized brands iOS probably isn't the best market. When it does become the best market which it probably will in a few years then consoles will be in real trouble. But for now I think a bigger budget title based on a big console property is probably best off on a console!

That is surprising since it has success with Nintendo, but if you want to be greedy and make money
by selling it for .99 cents on IPhone, I guess that is a smart move...

This is even better than Layton. It's a new game with new characters. :)
