Because I´m not afraid of death, finitism and randomness of the Universe. The need to sofocate those fears are the major reason for the creation of the concept of gods, imo.

so you think religious people are afraid of death?

Buddhism has no GOD's and atheism is about being pantheist which is the same as Buddhism

it is the same. A belief in and need for transcendence  as a psychological shield against the horror of the finite.

no its not as you are still a part of whatever is there not looking for what outside it

calling urself atheist send out the wrong message and spreads ignorance

you need to elaborate on your arguments beyond "no its not!". Of course all religious are based on the fear of death, isnt it that the promise of all of them? to transcend death?

atheism = a-theism, theism from theos, "God". Areligious would be a more fitting term, I agree.

I kinda hate myself for typing anything on this thread, but your closemindedness kinda gets to me. If I've learned something it's that you should never argue with religious people cause the arguments never go anywhere.

I was hoping I wouldn't have anything to do with this thread (considering it's obvious snake made this thread just to argue for the sake of argument), but I just wanted to say: You know that goes both ways, right?

The reason why that is is different depending on which of the sides you're arguing with.

Maybe, but eh...personally I've learned not to argue about religion OR irreligion with most people.

Despite what some may think, neither side is any better than the other, and I don't mean that in a good way.

From experience, I wouldn't say both sides are the same.

After reading through the thread more carefully and seeing the way OP behaves - People like you are the reason why I hate religion.

Like I said, Snakenobi is the living embodiment of the strawman militant atheists use to justify their hate...and he's performing the role flawlessly.

Yeah, it depends on the experience of the person.

Speaking for myself though:

- With blindly religious people, they are too touchy on many subjects.

- With atheists, I've asked them several "what if" questions, and it's always the same response "There could be many other explanations for this. I won't believe in bullshit." Even though the questions are more or less "what if this came true", and events occur that are exactly as stated in the books.

Even though Kantor pretty much said what I feel, I will put it in my own words. I don't see a reason to put my faith blindly on a God. I read somewhere that you cannot bring up new generations on ancient values (I cannot remember the exact words) and I think this has a lot of truth. We have to be willing to chance our believes, even if drastically based on the things that happen around us, but Religion is stuck on the bible and what some people "saw" thousands on years ago. They will not compromise, I do not know why. While Religion has it's benefits I will admit, however, I don't need it. I never have and until conclusive evidence is shown, I never will. I believe in my common sense and my own experiences and I am willing to change and live my life according to the present, not the past.

EDIT: For the record, I don't consider myself athiest.

"Trick shot? The trick is NOT to get shot." - Lucian

Too many religions to think one group has got it right while the rest of the world got it wrong.

Too big of a question and one I have answered more than enough on here.

Humans like to believe we are more important than we are that is why we rape everything, make it our own and tell others they are wrong and that there is only one way. We are just an arrogant and overly intelligent species with great imaginations.

so you fell into the trap that children are born with religion of their parents.i know that thinking, most people have it

anyways, pantheism and Buddhism isn't about somebody telling you about what is correct or not,it is about you deciding.

That "trap" really isn't about thinking, it's something that just goes on your birth certificate.

Not picking any religion is also all about me deciding, so I don't see why I should bother with what any religion has to offer when I already have what I want.

there are religion which don't offer anything

they are just like atheist thinking of life is a gift and do everything yourself thinking

most people who say they are atheist lack knowledge and think all religion are the same about heaven and hell.

Then why the hell bother?

'What if' questions are pretty pointless in a matter such as this. It doesn't make their position weak.

It's not about trying to convert them. I just wanted to hear what their thoughts are if such situations occured.

But yes, I do want to learn what would, with their own volition, convert/revert.

I have funny debates about this stuff with my closest friend IRL, who's an Afghan atheist.
