'What if' questions are pretty pointless in a matter such as this. It doesn't make their position weak.

It's not about trying to convert them. I just wanted to hear what their thoughts are if such situations occured.

But yes, I do want to learn what would, with their own volition, convert/revert.

I have funny debates about this stuff with my closest friend IRL, who's an Afghan atheist.

How have they not killed him yet?

Because he's not a militant atheist. Just a guy who goes about his business.

Are you suggesting that it's OK to kill militant atheists?

This is a great thread to quote Sam Harris. If this had been the first response then the next 12 pages would have been completely irrelevant. Take it away Sam:

“In fact, "atheism" is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a "non-astrologer" or a "non-alchemist." We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.”

If he was a Muslim first I imagine he'd still get in trouble if people found out. The more fundamentalist Muslims are very much not fans of apostacy.

Of course not. Just going by the law of the country.

In my view, people who want to debate religion should be given the freedom to take it up with Islamic scholars, perhaps even on TV.

Yeah he was a Muslim first. He doesn't get along at all with his mother, who's pretty religious.

He generally avoids getting into religious discussions with anyone. I'm one of the very few people who know about his irreligiousity (is that even a word? xD).

this thread has been completely irrelevant from the start, even without the first response

but to add to the confusion let me quote  John Safran, not because it adds anything meaningful to the thread, but just because i like what he said:

"I've always wondered why rich Westerners, dismissive about religion in general, find solace in Buddhism. Well, let's talk a look at the story of Prince Siddhartha, or Buddha as he became known. Basically, it's the story of a rich kid that decided to slum it. No joke - this guy Buddha was living at home in his palace, leeching off his dad until he was 30. Then like some spoiled trust-fund baby, he decides to leave the palace and finds all this romance in self-inflicted deprivation, all the while knowing that he could ring up his dad to top off his Visa card the minute anything went wrong. Hey, Buddha, here's a spiritual insight - all these poor people you were trying to emulate would've exchanged their noble life under the bodhi tree for the opulence of your dad's palace in a snap! Which brings me back to my original point - I wonder why all these rich Westerners can relate so well to Buddha? Well, maybe it's because Buddha is the prototypical spoiled rich kid acting all dirty and poor. Let's face it, if Buddha were alive today, he'd be playing bass guitar in the Strokes. Until next time, go to ****"

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

God is a metaphor, nothing more. I don't believe in anything that doesn't have substantial evidence supporting it. God, as a collective theory, is just too convenient to believe. I go with science. I don't fill in the blanks with fictional omnipotent beings just so I can feel good and trick myself into believing there's more than this life.

I hate religion because not only does it HAVE these irrational beliefs, but history is littered with examples of people pushing these irrational beliefs without good reason.

I maintain that if people could PROVE god was real, prove THEIR god was real, and prove their interpretations of their God are accurate, I'd drop the whole issue.

Why would God reveal himself to the simple mindness of Humanity? To be honest i do belive in God, and yet everyday i wonder why humans are so foolish and self centered? Maybe you know why? Also it makes me wonder why did he create humaninty in the first place sense all we do is leave a trail of destruction.

Because I´m not afraid of death, finitism and randomness of the Universe. The need to sofocate those fears are the major reason for the creation of the concept of gods, imo.

so you think religious people are afraid of death?

Buddhism has no GOD's and atheism is about being pantheist which is the same as Buddhism

it is the same. A belief in and need for transcendence  as a psychological shield against the horror of the finite.

no its not as you are still a part of whatever is there not looking for what outside it

calling urself atheist send out the wrong message and spreads ignorance

you need to elaborate on your arguments beyond "no its not!". Of course all religious are based on the fear of death, isnt it that the promise of all of them? to transcend death?

atheism = a-theism, theism from theos, "God". Areligious would be a more fitting term, I agree.

No offense but doesn't that technically mean sense every religion chances of being correct are extremly low doesn't that make nothingness just as lets say mathmatically extremly low?
