Forums - Sales - The fate of the PSP

@Leo

Did you completely ignore my post on purpose? The software sales aren't there to support the PSP too far out. Sony will need to release a follow up to spurr developers on again. Once you get burned a few times making games for a system, you usually learn to walk away and try something new elsewhere.

The only effective piracy prevention method for a console is to use a format for your games which is difficult and expensive to copy; the N64 cartridges, Gamecube Discs, and PS3's Blu-Ray discs are all good examples of this. It is pretty much impossible to prevent people from getting around any hardware protection you have, and if people can go out and buy (for little money) what they need to copy your games there is nothing that can stop it.

 Nintendo should be dipping the Wii circuit boards in super hard glue, that would prevent most people from modding their Wii's.  The PSP's firmware can be hacked no matter what now...  Sony can't stop it from happening.  They could put a crazy encyrption on every game but that would still be hackable.  I don't think Piracy is what has killed the PSP software sales, otherwise the DS would suffer an even worse fate.

Well, any physical modification no matter how simple will prevent most people from stealing games ...

A Wife/Father/Mother will often look at the gamer in their life with a puzzled look if they suggest that they're going to spend $50 to buy a mod-chip to modify their $200+ gaming system which has a high likelyhood of breaking the system; and even if they're successful just means that they will be wasting more time on videogames.

This should be the psp2

Well I do suppose that'd be right up Sony's alley. Just copy the iPhone, put some half-assed gaming technology in it and sell for $999. :p

Just a question. Which platform cost more to developed for? DS or PSP? Any estimations?

The PSP costs about 3x as much to develop for then the DS (at least according to info that came out awhile back about dev costs for each system). I believe the PSP was pretty close in costs to the PS2. So it costs less then the Wii to make games for but more then a DS. I believe the estimates were something like DS 250k-? PSP 750k-? PS2 900k-? Wii-1000k-?

It would all depend on the game though, a large scale game will obviously cost more to develop and who's to say it would be cheaper to make on a system that's got a smaller entrance cost? (entrance meaning cheapest you could make a halfway decent game for)

Those numbers are extremly wrong . I think I know what article you where talking baout , and they stated that overall a game for the DS costs ~ 300k $ , for the PSP between 500-700 k $ and for the PS2 it came surprisingly at 1000k $ . Its overall double , but some games just sell batter on the PSP ( Madden , NFS ) and lets dont forget , that no matter how low cartidge costs have went , CD formats are still cheaper ... -----> in conclusion I dont see support dropping for the PSP anytime soon :)

That's just a fanboy, uninformed response Leo,  and you wonder why people don't take you seriously.

 Unfortunatly its also true . Younger kids get full games uasually as presents from older people , while older people , who play games like Brain-training will allways have money to buy original games . The PSPs main users ( 14-25 years old ) usually dont have enough money , and they allways like ... how do they say ? I think its : F**k thye sistem !
