Well, any physical modification no matter how simple will prevent most people from stealing games ...
A Wife/Father/Mother will often look at the gamer in their life with a puzzled look if they suggest that they're going to spend $50 to buy a mod-chip to modify their $200+ gaming system which has a high likelyhood of breaking the system; and even if they're successful just means that they will be wasting more time on videogames.
