So yeah this is gonna cost at least $199
but I am thinking it is going to cost $249

No way.   It won't be over $200, that's insane for a handheld.  See: PSP Go.

I know but if they have all this stuff in it that I have been reading in the forumns there is no way it is going to cost anything under $199 but who knows, just my speculation.

By the way now Pachter should finally shut up with his Wii HD predictions... no way Nintendo will launch two platforms at the same time.

he already did.

Watch his latest Pach-atach on gametrailers. he says something about nintendo not being smart not releasing it this year, but he accepts the idea.

Pachter is such an ass.  Instead of admitting he was wrong, he calls Nintendo stupid for not doing what he predicted.  If Nintendo did what Pachter wanted, they would be out of business by now.

Congrats to the people who guessed DS2.

lol you self-owned yourself, GDC already passed

Except that many people said there's no way there'll be a new platform announced this year, DS is still printing money, new handheld is a long ways away, etc.

True, it was surprising, maybe Nintendo knows more about Sony's plans than we do (Corporate espionage?) and wants to get the drop on them

What amazed me is the volume of people here who completely ruled out the idea of a new platform this year and laughed at anything that suggested otherwise. ioi, nazna, among other veteran members completely discredited the idea that this could be happening. Others were spot on. It's interesting for sure.

The only real questionable cost is the 3D screens, and who knows what sort of deal they worked out with Sharp.  Given that Nintendo is basically Sharp's biggest customer for TFT LCDs, I'm guessing they're getting an amazing rate and Sharp's filling a gigantic order...

Everything else we've heard of (accelerometer, Tegra SOC, analog stick, rumble, 3G, etc) is off the shelf and could easily be included in a profitable sub-$200 handheld today.

I just realized that, they can put 3D movies on this thing lol, Avatar on 3DS!

And now the Netflix rumors come full circle...

Can you imagine , Avatar in 3D in you hands ...I hope Nintendo add the movie function to this one , the lack of movie playback on the DS-i is pretty sad for me ...(thank god i didnt got one ^^)

There is no future in 3D, like HD, its largely useless and will fail (after rendering everyone bankrupt).

I still don't think that 3D will be a huge deal on the handheld, but I know it's not going to bankrupt anybody. It's entirely a hardware problem, and once the hardware has been built and paid for (and I have a hard time believing it will be too expensive if Nintendo thinks it's affordable), it shouldn't add any developer cost. You don't need to design two textures or models, you just tell the computer to render them twice.

In a way, it keeps dev costs down, since it's using increased processing power to render the image twice (which doesn't require graphic designers) rather than using it to increase visual fidelity (which does require graphic designers).

So don't confuse 3D and HD. They aren't the same in terms of the costs of production and they aren't the same in terms of adding value to the experience.

the thing is, the DS sold ~30m this fiscal year down from 31.6m(?) the previous fiscal year. Sure, the DS has peaked, but you would think since there has been very few rumors about a PSP2 that Nintendo would have held off to capture a larger market before releasing the next system. Heck, the GameBoy lasted 9 years.

@soriku

this would be late 2010...

3D is the future, huh. With Sony leading the way, and Nintendo joining the party, I am as excited as ever to see what they going to do with this technology.

Back up!

ok, Nintendo started 3D, but failed. Sony is pushing it again, and Nintendo has joined the party.

I changed it.

They never left the 3D party that they had created lol so they did not join Sony :P here we go again keep on trying Sony boys… and girls

I`m preeeeetty sure Nintendo didn`t invent 3D

IN FACT they weren`t even the first to do 3D gaming, check it out  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Monster_Maze

That was one of my favourite games on the speccy. It wasn't 3d like we are talking about. Only about 2 frames a second and those were just static screens it was not running in a 3d engine so back then "3d" was a gimmick. But when you turned round and that t-rex was there you still shat yourself.

Was the master systems 3d glasses out before the virtual boy?

You`ve actually played that game ?

Wow, consider me impressed good sir.

Good question, Wiki doesn`t seem to have the release date but does have some info on it.

Thanks for digging up that thread, I argued with people in that thread over this so it's time for them to hold their hands up and accept that a DS successor is not as against logic as they thought.

It's a fond memory of one of my earliest games. I recommend getting it on an emulator if it's available and giving it a whirl.

When you see that warning that the T-rex is close and you had better run you will get chills. My first sense of atmosphere in a game and is comparable with anything I've played since.

Actually I'm going to try and find it. Wonder what it would look like on a 1080p screen?

And that was an excellent read. Good find.
