Forums - Sony - Sony Boss: AI is good, m'kay.

For those of us who disapprove of the role AI could have in shaping our industry, it appears the ride may finally be over. According to CEO Hideaki Nishino, Playstation is fully embracing it, and they're going in head-first whether you like it or not.

My advice? Start buying up your favorite retro consoles and games now.

Every game company has embraced AI. It’s all about how public and how much are they willing to acknowledge.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Well, this confirms it, Sony's boss has been replaced by AI. Its finally happening.

Been my opinion for a long time, anybody who doesn't want to support AI, leave gaming now.

Software developments are too expensive and too long, AI is coming. Hardware costs are skyrocketing; AI tools will be used for weaker hardware to run modern games.

I mean, what do you think PSSR is?

In the article is says it's not aiming to replace human models (so no generative AI for models) but to improve tools and get results faster, and that is where AI should be used.

The thing is, how intrusive are they willing to get, and how much devs would be forced to adapt to it? That can indeed be concerning.

He mentioned Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered as an example and I've never read anything bad about AI from any players or devs, so at least until now, I don't see a problem, actually the PSSR update has been exceptionally praised, as is the Sophy AI on GT7.

AI is not always a problem, how intrusive it can get is.

My concern is lazy developers will just have gamers use stuff like DLSS because they are too lazy for optimization.

Lego Batman specifications legit tells users to use FG to get a solid fps...  including to get 30 fps.

LEGO Batman PC requirements include DLSS, FSR or XeSS with Frame Gen - VideoCardz.com

4k 60 fps requires a 4070...  with DLSS upscaling and FG turned on..  I mean WTF?

Far be it from me to pretend to know what's inside his mind (or anyone elses), but his wording is quite liberal, if not completely enthusiastic. He isn't parsing words and leaves almost no room for optimism (unless a person supports and fully welcomes AI; if that's the case, pop the corks now).

I have no issues with this.

The article goes into depth about how they're using it so far and all examples sound good. Being against AI on this level is like being against DLSS 1-4 or photo geometry to save on modelling time, or photography to get better textures etc

Now I'm sure they're going to go beyond those cherry picked examples but lets reserve the backlash for when they do. This is no different from having better engine tools to simplify tasks

I think this concern should be put to rest to be honest. Look at all the PS5/Series X games with terrible image quality even without AI upscalling options. Developers have already been making bad choices prior to DLSS/FSR4, this is just going to be a way to mitigate those choices. I also think we should stop throwing about the lazy dves comment, they're clearly not lazy and the games are crazy expensive... Time and priority is just not given to performance and instead is focused elsewhere or games are rushed out.

Regarding Batman PC requirements are often pretty unreliable, a lot of devs don't seem to be able to write them probably lol. curious to see what the actual reality is. If the games are running fairly on PS5, no way they should need DLSS on PC for 30fps

There are tools that evolve, like a hammer and than get a better hammer.
And then there are transformative tools that upset things altogether.

The internal combustion engine had a farmer think: "How about getting a tractor instead of these horses and manual labour".

Using the internet to translate something from a language you did now know, instead of buying a dictionary or hire a professional translator. Let alone acquiring knowledge buying an encyclopedia or visit a library.

A fashion company that for it's next catalogue is not going to engage with a casting company for models, hire a photo studio, getting a photographer, someone for lighting and make-up. But instead have somehow use a computer to roll-out all the images they want.

You cannot stop it, because it's about increasing productivity. An eternal quest since the beginning of man kind.
