The textures and overall level of detail would've been subpar on the Xbox 360 much less the Switch. Even with the same art style it could've had much nicer textures, lighting, effects, and overall detail.

I'm sure they could up the lighting and effects with a flick of a switch on whatever engine they're using.  They chose not to.  It's supposed to be simple.

Not necessarily.  Their last platform was 3DS, it's likely these new effects are all just that: new.

This game is an experiment. Game Freak will be eyeing at reviewers.
They have Gen 8 in development, but this "Let's GO" game has quite a few deviations from a main series title.
Like the lack of random encounters, the GO catching mechanics, Pokemon following you in the overworld, etc.

If any of these features are well-received, expect them to be implemented in Gen 8 somehow. Otherwise, we could well expect a "Let's GO" line of games if this is successful. I think we'll probably see:
2019: Gen 8
2020: Sinnoh remake/Let's Go sequel
2021: (Or)
2022: Gen 9.

That was a mistranslation error by a journalist.

Mm, many places are reporting the same, the latest update on Nintendo Everything says this:

Update: Final nail in the coffin regarding online play – there is none. There is wireless and play on the same screen, but no online.

Nintendo Everything's info there must be wrong or outdated.

Masuda himself said there would be online battling and trading:

The Good

-Visible Pokemon in the overworld finally after generations of waiting

-Pokeball throwing motion controls - I'm not sure how this is good. Would have preferred it to be optional

-Co-op functionality

-Battling is still the same turn based goodness we're used to But apparently not for wild battles. How do you train your Pokemon?

The Bad

-You no longer have to weaken Pokemon before you catch them. How are they going to make catching Legendaries feel right with this new mechanic?

-The graphics, they're barely an upgrade over Sun and Moon

-The artstyle, the character models look weird, they kind of returned to the chibi style of gen 6 which sucks

-Only the original 151 Pokemon

-No sign of the rumored new Pikachu and Eevee evolutions

I like that wild Pokémon aren't random encounters now and visible outside of battles, but no fights/just throwing balls at them feels dumbed down. Additionally the CP mechanic from GO seems to be in, so you might have to catch dozens of the same species in order to get one with "perfect" base stats - not a fan of that at all.

The graphics look good, but the grid based layout of everything (1:1 gen1) is a bit dull, I think arranging it more organically would have made a better impression (maybe that's just me).

Update: Looks like Nintendo Everything are correcting themselves confirming there will be online.

Lastly, we have one more report on online usage. There unfortunately was a high degree of confusion here to due conflicted reports coming out of last night’s event in Tokyo, particular from the Q&A session. But after speaking with Masuda, IGN reports that battling and trading online are both available online and locally. Online ranked battles will not be available, however. There are also no plans to use Nintendo Switch Online. GameSpot is reporting similar information, so we’re hoping that this has been settled once and for all.

Looks like you're playing Pokemon GO but with the story of R/B/Y. Hard pass.

It is essentially a Yellow remake with Go gameplay elements built in according to Serebii.

If the trainer battles are not the mindless swiping trash from Pokémon Go, I might be interested in the game.

Now that there is a casual side series in the Pokemon games with Let's Go, do you think gen 8 is going to up the seriousness, difficulty and competitiveness of Pokemon?

That would honestly be really nice. Let this side series rake in the dough with the casual audience and then up the risks and difficulty they're willing to take with the core series. If they have a successful casual spin off series, they don't have to worry anymore about losing too many causal players with the core series. This could be the best thing to happen to the core series in all honesty.

Exactly. All the rumours were a bit worrying, if we apply them to the main series, but knowing there are two different series with two target audiences makes this all different. The main series has not target everyone anymore, if parts of the audience (and more) are adressed with Let's Go. This is in the end awesome news and probably makes the overall audience for the Pokemon IP even bigger.

K I convinced my fiance to buy me a Switch and this game so im all on board!! (Actually i didnt need to convince her I just told her to buy it for me and she was fine with it lol)

But depending on which exclusive pokemons that come out for Pikachu or Eevee will determine which version I will buy. It'd be nice (and im sure it will happen) if Nintendo releases at bundle of this.

I think this is great, I play Pokemon Go, but haven't played the main series religiously so this could help me really get back into it in time for the 2019 Pokemon game.
