Does this product capture the casual market, though? It looks like it's geared at kids and their parents, a market Nintendo and the Switch already focus on, not necessarily all the other age groups and demographics that would constitute the casual market and helped make the Wii and DS wildly successful.

Well, throughout the first 10 months, Nintendo has primarily marketed the Switch towards teenagers and young adults who are dedicated gamers and/or diehard Nintendo fans. No kid and his/her parents would be too interested in Breath of the Wild (except for my boss, who is a diehard Zelda fan, and so are his kids because of him.) I mean, games like Fire Emblem Warriors, Pokken DX, DOOM, Skyrim, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 aren't games that I or a lot of gamers would associate with the "kids and their parents" crowd. Even Super Mario Odyssey was pushed and marketed more towards dedicated gamers and Nintendo fans who grew up with 64 and Sunshine than the new generation of kids.
This is really the first time since the Switch came out where Nintendo is pushing a new game that they made and are marketing specifically for kids... and kids at heart.

As for the casual market, that's what their mobile games are for.

Well, I know I've seen plenty of advertising aimed squarely at kids and/or parents with games like 1-2S, MK8D, Pokken, Arms, Minecraft, and Odyssey. This may be one of the first products specifically for that market, but nowhere near the start of the targeted marketing to them.

It's very interesting, but I am most curious as to see if it ends up more like WiiFit or PSVR.

You mean... a strong success like Wii Fit (>40M) or a niche success like PSVR (~2M).

I personally guess niche success. It will be wildly successful in it's designated niche (kids), but not reach much outside. So, seeing that are two SKUs and people might buy both - 5 million?

Your measurements are off. Looks like you're trying to repel vampires.

A D-Pad that repels vampires? Should be useful for Castlevania.

Interesting concept, but will it be understood/appreciated? I'm a bit doubtful, Nintendo seem a bit hung up insisting that people want to play games in wacky and fairly cumbersome ways.

It's cool for sure though, let's wait and see what happens. Like anything and everything quirky, it'll probably be a hit in Japan!

Yeah, this is not really how it works. It should be something like this:

Nintendo: This is for kids!

Gamer parents: But how in the name of god do you want me to spend 70-80$ for a piece of cardboard and app-store level software, that my kid will only use for one nigth and then its the dumpster for it?

Nintendo: You don't get it, its for kids!

Gamer parnets: You dont get it. I have to pay for this not my 8 year old son...

Nintendo: Do you want a pack of stickers for 10$ as well?

I don't think that's what some people meant when they asked Nintendo to think inside the box for a change

Brilliant =D

Yeah, someone who complains about the price doesn't have kids says this and doesn't know how expensive toys can be.

On top of that, it's 60 dollars for the game (app store level? do you have the game already??), and an extra 10 to 20 (per set) for the cardboard. And you don't know anything about the cardboard quality and what kids are actually going to do with it.

Don't be ridiculous.

Man, if this thread doesn't turn out like the Nintendo Switch January presentation threads, I'm going to be very disappointed.

How can Nintendo this out of touch!

Done, you can thank me later.

A huge cardboard box was one of my favourite toys (Can't be the only one?)

The easy allies seem to love it:
