I fully agree. I was for a long time on the fence about buying the Switch on launch-day. I decided the day before launch, and mostly because Zelda looked more and more awesome and I didn't wanted to miss anything. I already knew I would be away from home for the weekend, and the idea of NOT playing Zelda for days and then would be a normal workweek, which would reduce my playexperience - I decided to go for the Switch. Luckily I talked to the guy in the electronics market and he recommended preordering, even if it was the day before launch. The launch day I came in after work and everything was already gone., so good I preordered last minute. And it was the right decision. I took the system and Zelda home, unpacked it, then grabbed my stuff and hit the train - and played Zelda. I didn#t even started my Switch experience on my projector, I was starting mobile. And it was great. I played the whole weekend: on the train, in my bed, whenever there was a downtime, exactly like Arlo describes, and it was great. Zelda is an awesome game, and I'm happy I could start right away. And now I'm strongly thinking about double dipping for Mario Kart, I already have it for WiiU, but the idea to play it on the train or on vacation in the hotel room is strong.

I don't think we really even have to "beg" for ports of older games. It'll likely happen inevitably because publishers are going to look at Switch sales and then look at their content catalog and what can be ported to the system easily/reasonably and within a short amount of time.

Skyrim sales will be watched very carefully. This is the showcase.

The funny thing for me is that the main reason I'd like to have a Switch is so that I can play the type of Japanese RPGs the 3DS and Vita had on my television. I've realized that I'm just not going to carry a dedicated gaming system around with me and I simply do not enjoy playing on a tiny screen when I'm at home.

Other than Zelda and perhaps a few other games, Nintendo's typical home console catalog does nothing for me. The 3DS catalog did interest me quite a bit but I'm just not a fan of handhelds. When the price goes down, it's probably going to be on my radar.

Honestly, the price is probably the only real problem with it being a great candidate for a "second system".

Beforehand my strongest interest in Switch was Monster Hunter. I like handhelds and handheld games and have opportunity to play on the train, or while staying at my parents, but while mostly I do not care much about downgraded graphic it did really hurt with Monster HUnter. Not really the graphic as whole, but the resolution. In Monster Hunter seeing stuff further away is cool, and MH3G in HD was doing a lot for me. MH4G felt like a big downgrade, being reduced to 3DS. So I hope for MonHUn for Switch.

This is probably similar to your reason. And the Switch will work that way. It goes both ways: home console experience on the go and handheld games on the big screen. That's pretty cool. I can't await the inevitable release of MonHun.

This video matches my opinion 100%. Im a big retro gamer and kind of a purist so I greatly prefer to buy original copies of games on their original hardware over services like the virtual console but if metroid prime came to the eshop I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Portability goes a long way for me so I could legitimately see myself rebuying huge portions of my collection if they end up getting remasters or virtual console releases. I skipped buying Skyrim again on the ps4 but I'll definitely buy the switch version because it's the portable version or hell I was in the middle of I am setsuna when the switch version was announced but I stopped playing my ps4 version then dropped $40 on the game again and replayed half the game a 2nd time then went on to finish the game on the switch.

There's only a small market left for "small/medium" experiences because mobile can seep into that territory and has made that a red ocean. Mobile doesn't need buttons because it has its own killer app -- free, which evens the odds, or puts the odds in its favor even.

Actually I'm disappointed with mobile games for the most part. I was excited for Fire Emblem Heroes, because the Fire emblem gameplay would easily work with touch, and I expected an experience near the usual Fire Emblem games. Instead they really did dumb down the gameplay. They could have easily bigger maps (you could move around the map with dragging and maybe zoom in and out), they could have proper gameplay where I can choose which attack I use, which gear my characters have and stuff like that. Instead there are the simplest possible maps and a dumbed down gameplay. Mobile games could do much more, but the potential stays mostly untapped. Even if there are good games out there, it is hard to find them.

Problem with that whole situation is Vita could not run PS3 type games. They had to be scaled down to a large degree to the point where they never really felt like playing a PS3.

It's like saying you want to be a model but not being all that good looking. It makes a difference if you actually are good looking. Vita couldn't cut the mustard, Switch does though. It's obviously not the most powerful hardware but IMO it just makes the cut off to be able to play relatively high end games that go beyond what people expect of portable games.

I think if you own the system too, the appeal of it becomes more immediate when you actually have it. Being able to just pick it up off your nightstand and be playing a game as robust as Zelda: BotW or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really feels ... I dunno. It's different. It does not feel like a 3DS or Vita.

It's actually a fairly core product.

Actually, the Vita had the problem that it lacked games. Sony wasn't working for it with it's full power, they were keeping dev-capacities for the upcoming PS4. Sony seemingly somehow hoped, that 3rd-parties would magically appear on their own. And some tried. But it missed the big games from Sony itself. All it got were sidegames of big franchises. Uncharted Golden Abyss for instance, no main Uncharted game. Switch gets from the start the big Zelda game. And coming up more, and as it is the only product for Nintendo in the future it is clear the devs are concentrating their work on the Switch. This is what Vita lacked, otherwise it could have been so much more.

He's actually right though, Switch power wise outperforms Wii U even in dock mode so off the bat the games aren't dumbed down Wii U games like PSP and Vita were dumbed down from PS2 and PS3 both current platforms at the time. NS may not be as powerful as PS4 and X1 but because it's still the most powerful Nintendo platform released it can accomdate console level games from Nintendo which vastly helps in its execution, BOTW is better on NS and not cut down in anyway like the games on PSP and Vita were and this was a game ported over in something like 7-8 months the games in future will be built from the ground up for it so will improved over the Wii U while PSP and Vita from the start were never going to improve over the PS2 and PS3. He's right in that what the PSP and Vita aimed to do was a good selling point it was the erratic execution that let the platforms down.

Most of the 'stuff' that makes playing games at home on your couch hard, is life as a mature person. Work, visiting relatives or old friends, watching your kids play sports or school stuff, and etc. Really not places to be immersed in a video game. You can't play while you are driving. I seems to me the Switch is a time waster when you are on public transport or the rare times you are in line at the DMV or Dr office. I've already seen two employees at my job get in trouble because of their Switch addiction. Between their phone and Switch, they had no time for actual work. They were actually indignant about getting in trouble like they have a right to get paid to waste time and play Zelda at work.

But that was the whole point of that game.It is to function as a "gateway drug", offering a simple and basic game, or version if you want, so that the players leave wanting more complex maps and gameplay, and thus be presented to the core games.Otherwise the decision to keep making its own hardware would be moot. And Heroes was and is not a game aimed at us.It is a game aimed not necessarily to the casual player, but to the market that never played a FE game, and to a lesser extent, Nintendo games.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

bit awkward to say that the demographics of Arlo is also the older experienced player?
