Forums - Gaming Discussion - I know why the Switch Pro controller is so expensive

I'm actually okay with the pro (not really the dock) due to battery life, I hate PS4 Controller battery life, and if I could have paid 10 bucks more for much better battery I would have.

I think we can all agree that every company rips you off with the accessories, and not just in gaming.

I think this was what I was trying to get at, in my artless, awkward way

Accessories are notorious for high mark-up, and all console makers are guilty. Before labeling the pro controller a rip-off or Nintendo a greedy, unscrupulous corporation, take a look at the competition. Sometimes we're a little blinded by our brand loyalty, myself included.

I think you are missing the point.  Yes, the competition is also greedy with accessories.  However, Nintendo has decided to raise the bar by charging even more than the competition.

Sadly, if they are successful, the competition will follow suit, and all of us will be paying more for accessories.

Hey, I'm not happy with the price. Maybe I'll buy a Pro Controller when it drops to $40 or $50. $70 is just too rich for my blood, especially when I'm getting a usable controller with the base system.

But all these companies keep trying to push the envelope and see what they can get away with. What's helping them to get away with it is what I referenced above: brand loyalty. Nintendo loyalists will pay $70 for a Pro Controller. Sony fans will cry foul, until the DualShock 5 is released for $75, and then they'll hold their tongues. How many PS4 owners derided MS for its online paywall? Now they're paying $60 a year for the honor of playing online multiplayer.

The problem is that fans are always making a stand against the other guy.

I bet a lot of these people complaining probably spent 400-500 bucks on a console, 60 bucks on most of their games, are shelling out $60 a year for online services, and threw $100 down on that premium XB One Gears controller..

I mean, yeah 70 bucks is probably a little overpriced but compared to other gaming controllers/accesories, and the fact that you get charging, HD rumble, and gyro functionality, it's really not too bad.

People also forget Nintendo can't really afford to bleed money in their gaming divisions while earning enough revenue to cover their losses in other avenues. They are purely a gaming company, and thus have to profit in that field, otherwise there IS no Nintendo..

Fixed that for you :)

What makes it superior? Other than the fact the Joycons don't have one at all.

Because it's a properly shaped d-pad. Split d-pads unfortunately collect grime more easily. Additionally, the slight roll & click of the d-pad gives a much more distinct feeling of the precise direction you're pressing. PS split d-pad feels too soft by comparison.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

That said it is probably a combination of the "HD rumble", "Amiibo scanning", "battery" and greed. Why do I include greed? Because there is no way that dock is $90. Thus if they would WIDELY overprice that, I'm be willing to say they would overprice anything.

I thought the dock price was high too, but USB-C hdmi docks which also charge aren't that cheap either.

Or whatever the light bar does.. vs the switch having nothing like it.

Light bar is to know which player you are, no? Pro has a player led display at the bottom of the controller
http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-Switch/Accessories/Accessories-1183144.html

It is kinda a regression from what most other controllers have.

Given that the benefits from having the light bar are taken away from the fact that:
It is not used by most developers.
    Drains the battery faster.
Adds more complexity to finding out what player you are at a glance.
    Reflects off of glossy TVs.

And fans are always supporting silly decisions by their champion.  I find it less "evil" when a company plays catch up with a competitor, than a company who goes against the status quo.

I am sure that Nintendo did a financial model, and they are expecting to make more money with a higher price (as opposed to more units sold at a lower price), because they are expecting a certain amount of hard core fans to pay anything.

It's not "hardcore" fans. It's the traditional gamer.

Nintendo knows that teh majority of the people buying the Switch will just use the controller that comes with. They are taking advantage of the traditional gamer that "NEEDS" it's traditional controller. They know that those people will buy the controller regardless, because they believe that there is no other way to game.

Besides, as many have pointed out, its hardly a price difference from competitors. Like what $5, maybe $10. And I bet many of those would hand you $5 or $10 right now if you made thier controllers battery last 10x longer than it does now.

'Member the good ol' days when two controllers were standard with a new system?
I 'member!

A Nintendo-quality cable certainly makes this a much fairer price.

Because a cable is worth $30...

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).
