What makes it superior? Other than the fact the Joycons don't have one at all.

Because it's a properly shaped d-pad. Split d-pads unfortunately collect grime more easily. Additionally, the slight roll & click of the d-pad gives a much more distinct feeling of the precise direction you're pressing. PS split d-pad feels too soft by comparison.
