Forums - Sports Discussion - Arroyo Valley High coach suspended for winning

San Bernardino Arroyo Valley High School in California suspended girls basketball coach Michael Anderson for two games after his team defeated Bloomington (Calif.) High School 161-2, the Press Enterprise reports.

Bloomington coach Dale Chung said after the game that Arroyo Valley played full-court press for the entire first half before heading into halftime up 104-1, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports. "People shouldn't feel sorry for my team," Chung said. "They should feel sorry for his team, which isn't learning the game the right way."

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock, and Anderson lobbied to implement a running clock in the third quarter as well but was denied by officials.

"I didn't play any starters in the second half," Anderson said. "I didn't expect them (Bloomington) to be that bad. I'm not trying to embarrass anybody. And I didn't expect my bench to play that well. I had one (bench) player make eight of nine threes."

Anderson added that if he could go back, he wouldn't have played his starters after the first quarter, but if he could do it all over again, "I wouldn't play the game at all."

"I've known him for about seven years ... He's a great X's and O's coach. Ethically? Not so much," Chung said. "He knows what he did was wrong."

Anderson missed Arroyo Valley's 80-19 win Wednesday and will also miss Friday's game before returning for the school's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event Monday. Anderson's son Nicholas coached the team in his father's absence Wednesday.

Why the fuck are they playing such shit teams?? A 161-2 win and then an 80-19 win, the players arent learning or achieving anything by playing these games. They are better off holding a training session. And seriosuly banning a coach for having his team dominate -_- I would be pissed as the coach that they were even made to play these games. Seriously Ive played in games like this before and it sucks, you learn nothing, you achieve nothing and you feel like an asshole doing it. Somebody find them some competition so they can compete, get better and hopefully find a future in the sport.

Losing by that bad, that team needs to take some time and dedicate it to practice. I guess that it could be considered unsportsmans like but I feel that suspension is a bit harsh. Although I'm not really the best person to make that judgement since I don't play competitive school sports.

The opposite coach, Chung, sounds like a crybaby. His team got destroyed by backup players and it could have been worse without a running clock. Does he think the other team should stop playing entirely? That they should quit playing defense? That they should quit shooting the ball? Ridiculous. He's trying to teach his team to play on the mercy of other teams, which to me is not the "right way".

Why even play if you're not going to give your best or if you're asking the other team not to give their best? Teach your team to have some pride.

He got suspended for (his team) kicking too much ass?

I feel so sorry for those girls who won 161-2. Clearly they don't know how to play the right way.

My thoughts exactly.

What did this guy expect? That the other team just dribble up to halfcourt on every possession after Q1 or halftime and hand them the ball over? You got wrecked. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself what you need to do better, not what the other team did wrong.

Punishing a coach because his team won fair and square is just crazy but only possible in California. Turn the world on it's side and everything loose will land in California.
